It has been a long twenty-eight years. Long, and lonely. There is always a crisis nipping at her heels, never enough time to breathe.
But tonight, there is Din, Arbiter of the Church, here in Junia’s study, with a plate of food and a flask of drink, and little else. Is this not mercy enough?

It has been fifty-nine years since the Heresy, fifty-nine years that the world has been rotting from the inside out. There will not be a sixtieth year.
Queen Junia, first and only of her name, sits upon her father’s throne at the Worldtree’s base, presiding over her people’s final months. Even in the ashen twilight of her reign, there’s still work to be done: avenging angels at her city’s gates, a starving populace to placate, the Church’s High Priestess still sniffing around for any scrap of information. Six more months to make Aziah as comfortable as possible before the end.
The ghosts at her heels still whisper. Her time is all but up. But it’s been fifty-nine years since Junia had the luxury of failure, and longer still since she let herself look back and face the past.

I am a disgrace. I will prostrate myself before the Tomb, making my prayers, and then I will find a length of rope. I plan to tie the noose around my neck, climb onto a platform, and step forward. A necromantic death is too good for me. This must be done by human hands.
