Kai Midoriya has protected her twin for as long as she can remember. At least, since they were four. Her brother--Izuku--had never been good at keeping himself safe, but the real trouble only began once he had been diagnosed as quirkless.
Even after the fact, Kai never left his side, never ridiculed him or even poked fun. All she wanted to do was keep Izuku safe. Maybe that emotion was what steered her quirk away from manifesting as one of her parents quirks, and instead becoming something entirely new in their family. Protection was a key part of her mindset, and what better way to protect someone than to become something big enough to scare away threats?
A transformation quirk, is what the doctor had labeled it. When the ears and tail had begun growing in, it had hurt, but she had endured. And then the warping part was a whole different situation.
