Summary
“I need… I need to tell you something, Hollander.” Ilya squeezes his eyes shut, willing his mouth to stop trembling. Tears roll down his face, church-quiet, silent as prayers, and Ilya touches his cheek curiously, as if he didn’t know his eyes could do that. He can’t remember the last time he cried. It might have been behind the curtains of their Moscow apartment, right after his mother died. Death seems to have this effect on him.
“Spit it out, I haven’t got all day.”
Ilya visualizes Shane’s furrowed eyebrows — his angry kitten face, as he likes to call it in his head — and thinks, No, I haven’t got all day either. In fact, I might not have any day left after this, and a miserable laugh escapes him at the thought.
The airplane crash happens way earlier in the timeline. Shane and Ilya aren’t together yet — in fact, they haven’t even admitted their feelings to themselves, until the perspective of death and an ill-timed confession completely reshuffles the cards.
Or, Ilya confesses his love to Shane during the plane crash, and Shane thinks it’s a prank in very bad taste.

After the tuna melt debacle, but before Rose, Ilya makes the reckless decision to go to a gay bar to take his mind off of Shane. When photographs get published, Shane has a realization and devises a plan: he's going to ask Ilya Rozanov to marry him.
Ilya's going through enough without things he can't have being dangled in front of him. He needs to figure out a different way to avoid going home, because eventually Shane Hollander will realize what Ilya already knows: Ilya isn't worth what Shane wants to do for him.

He spared a glance out the window and saw green and brown terrain rapidly approaching and fuck, he was going to throw up or pass out if he looked, so he looked back at the picture, breathing through his panic until a shaky smile landed on his face, his tears drying on his cheeks from the heat. A dull sense of calm settled over him even as each breath burned his lungs and his ears had long stopped processing sound from the screeching and alarms and screaming. Shane, he thought as he stared at the picture, running his thumb over the curves of Shane’s mouth, over the freckles bridging his cheekbones, over the temples he’d pressed kisses against more times than he could count. I love you.
