Summary
There’s a hand, fingers cold, on his elbow – someone trying to get his attention. Usually, usually, his staff would know that just calling his name is enough, that he’s fine-tuned to the sound of it like a dog waiting for a command. But as he looks down and then to the person the chilled digits belong to, he finds Whitaker staring up at him owlishly. A shudder goes through him, senses zeroing in on the point of contact.
“Can I help you?” It comes out bitchier than he intended, caught off-guard as he is. But he doesn’t take it back, not even when the kid bites at his lower lip as if he wants to apologize.
“I just wanted to ask if you liked the chicken parm.”

“You’re lying.” Whitaker whines.
“I’m not! I’m not! Just..” Robby smiles, flicking his cigarette. Whitaker hums, a sort of ‘go on.’
“He reminds me of you, when you first started.” He says, carefully neutral. And Whitaker almost gets defensive before he realizes Robby isn’t entirely wrong. Robby smiles, nudging him with his knee.
Whitaker blinks at him a few times. And then, then he says something that neither of them had expected in the slightest.
“Does that make him your new favorite?” He asks, quietly. And it startles Robby. They stare at each other for a moment. Whitaker looks nervous, like he regrets even speaking. And Robby, he doesn’t quite know how to respond.
Slowly, Robby takes the last drag off his cigarette. Huffing as he presses the ember against the wood on the bench between them. He flicks his head and hums. Whitaker watches him quietly.
“You really have matured.” Robby snorts, and Whitaker frowns, crossing his arms and leaning forward to catch Robby’s downturned gaze. Before he can throw a fit, Robby speaks.
