Carl’s first impression of Akram is not his face or even his voice. It’s his solid weight settled on Carl’s belly, legs splayed wide, slacks riding up just slightly as Akram saves Carl from his pitiful attempt to bench press. Carl is secretly grateful to have a legitimate reason to be out of breath, not just the exquisite man perched sinfully on his lap. All in all, it’s an incredibly distracting way to meet his new assistant.

Quentin… can’t really interpret the look on Eliot’s face. He almost looks nauseated, like the news that Quentin and Alice’s relationship is over is somehow terrifying to him.
“Are you okay?” he asks, and something about the way he says it almost makes Quentin start crying. This, of all things. There’s a desperation there, in the sheen of Eliot’s eyes, like the thought of Quentin not being okay is deeply, viscerally painful to Eliot somehow. As if Quentin’s ever really okay. As if he’s been okay at all recently. Ha ha. Imagine a world in which he’s okay. Poor Eliot, wanting the impossible for his friend. What a beautiful heart he has. His biggest regret.
He hasn’t found it yet, and apparently it’s not something a person can just know about himself without a lot of soul searching, and Eliot has never taken the time to examine that particular metaphysical piece of his internal makeup. He’s a cliché, afraid of what he’ll find when he dives too deep. He doesn’t like to think of the part of himself that he knows to be ugly, preferring to focus on the outward bits, the things he can gussy up for public consumption.
God, even that is far too much shrewd introspection for his tastes. This goddamn mental trap has already ruined him. Happy Place indeed. Fuck you, universe. Fuck you, Eliot Waugh.
But he does want to live, at the end of the day. He wants to get out, he wants to oust this thing from his body, he wants to see his friends.
Tight, hot grip of anticipation against the base of his spine. His body, which isn’t a real body, is strung taut as a live wire. When he does manage to find the door and walk through outside of the trap of his own mind, there are exactly two people he’s hoping against hope he’ll see on the other side.
And now, hazy mists of memory notwithstanding, he’s about to see quite a lot of them both.
