Summary
Auston really looks at him this time. Takes in Mitch's sunken in eyes, tired look and bowed over posture. Head down half the time, fingernails picked at until they're red, inflamed and bleeding. He can't say anything, his own face reflects it. His own nails bitten down, manicures be damned. He feels it, too, feels the immense weight of loss, of failure. Directionless, hopeless, adrift. Decades of failure rests on their shoulders and he can't help but collapse under the weight of it. He figures Mitch is feeling the same thing.

"You're drunk." He breathes it out in one rush of syllables, but he's rushing straight past drunk himself and can feel it in his cheeks, his chest, his hands and feet. He can't make eye contact, he's never had anyone speak to him like this. For some reason, that thought makes everything he's said more true.
