Summary
The year is 1992. Regulus Black is locked away at Malfoy Manor - until a murder attempt forces his aunt to cast him off, and he's sent reeling into uncertain territory.
Regulus claws his way back onto his feet - he is a Black, after all - but a reunion with his best friend James (Finley, but also sometimes Potter) reveals that a number of cracks have begun forming in their friendship of years.
Those cracks widen further when someone in their dormitory pries open the Chamber of Secrets for the first time in decades, leaving Regulus to wonder whether he can trust even his closest friend in the world - and whether James can trust him in kind.

Summary
The year is 1991. Regulus Black, an orphan apparently uncannily similar to the father he never knew, has been raised alone at 12 Grimmauld Place. He has two friends from two different worlds: Regulus' cousin, Draco Malfoy, and James Finley, the muggle boy with hazel eyes and incorrigible bravery who lives down the road and is the only reason Regulus has seen the world that exists outside of stifling pureblood society.
James, like Regulus, never knew his true parents. James, like Regulus, has strangely vivid dreams that sometimes seem as if they're trying to tell him something. And when his eleventh summer rolls around, it's revealed that James, like Regulus, is magic after all, and bound for Hogwarts come September.
Regulus knows he should be excited to have his friend join him at Hogwarts. Instead, he's frantic with the sense that magic will be James' undoing. And as he and James progress through their first year at Hogwarts, the magical world seems hellbent on proving Regulus right.

Regulus has no idea that the Grim-like creature he shares secrets and bacon sandwiches with is his brother. He has no idea, that is, until he tries to say goodbye to 'Snuffles' for the last time, and his canine friend finally reveals his human form.
