Audata dried her hands on the towel and hurried to her child. “Phainon, love, what –”
“My mark!” her four-year-old son interrupted, voice quickly growing hysterical. Audata reeled back. Small chest heaving and words slurring, he showed her his arm where his soulmark that had once glowed with the golden color of the sun was now rapidly losing color. “It’s gone!”

Gorgo pokes him on the shoulder. “Get to the point, dear. I’m bored.”
Eurypon shoots her a pitiful look. “A-anyway, Mydeimos. Your task is to travel to the far lands of Aedes Elysiae and slay the dragon that continues to terrorize the kingdom. You must also do your duty as prince and rescue the holy maiden who is kept as a prisoner in a tower.”
“What if the maiden doesn't want to be rescued?”
Hyacine shrugs casually when everyone turns to her. “I just think it’s a bit egotistic, assuming that she’d want to be rescued by a prince. She could be hatching a plan to help herself for all we know.”
Their heads swivel back to Eurypon, who’s sweating bullets under Gorgo’s glare.

Summary
So he watches him slumber, for there is nothing else to do, or so he tells himself. Like this, he can observe all he wants, and the mermaid can’t make a fuss. He brings a gentle hand to tuck his bangs behind his ear, and traces his fingertips down his jaw.
Even if he finds Phainon irritating, even if he wishes to be alone, he can’t relinquish the fact he saved him. Found him in the dark abyss and plucked him from his grave. For that, he does not know if he should be grateful, but he knows he should be less harsh with him.
Mydeimos tries to find a cure for his terminally ill mother, Queen Gorgo, but attempt after attempt he fails. On his last chance, he captures a mermaid, a creature whose flesh should solve his woes, but he can't bring himself to kill and sets him free.
And when his father learns of such an act years later, he condemns him to drown in the same ocean where he enacted his betrayal, only to be saved by the very same mermaid who brings him to a secluded island to heal.

Phainon’s breath caught. He knew exactly where this was headed, but he tilted his head with feigned innocence.
“What’s the need for that?” he asked lightly, as if the answer weren’t written in the air between them. “They’re comfortable right where they are.”
Mydei couldnʼt help but chuckle. He didn’t pull his hand away. Instead, he brushed slowly over Phainon’s knuckles. “You’re really going to make me say it?”
Phainon hummed, turning his face more toward him. “I think I am. What do you think you’re going to do once they’re off?”
