So Legato sighs, and he does. “I’m sorry for—” disrupting is on the tip of his tongue; Legato wrinkles his nose and sighs again. “That is, I didn’t mean to stand out there for so long. I was trying to make up my mind.”
“What about?” Knives, indeed, doesn’t seem the most occupied. He holds a softcover book in one hand, thumb folded over a page to keep it open. He looks bored more than anything, a single eyebrow raised as his gaze settles upon Legato.
The black hair… ages him, Legato thinks. This man who for so long defied human standards of agency, of growing weaker… He seems fallible, now, touchable. But Legato never loved him for his immortality. He carefully closes the distance, then sets the plate in his hand on Knives’ desk.
“...Cake,” Knives says at length.
“Yes, it’s cake,” Legato agrees.
