It’s second nature to downplay and deny it after all those years of trying to keep her interest in it under wraps. But just now, the solid warmth of Neville’s thigh presses against hers and she feels the shift beneath her ribs, like latches clicking into place and giving space for her lungs to expand normally for once.
“We did,” she says, letting herself meet his eyes for a fraction of a second.
“He told me you were better at it than him, which I find hard to belie—”
“That’s because it’s not true,” Pansy interrupts, turning to Neville. She raises a brow, feigning confidence when her insides are a twisting, pulsing mess of something with a terribly long wingspan. Pixies? Doxies? A fucking hippogriff? “Are you taking the piss?”
Neville shakes his head, eyes bright with mirth though his mouth stays serious. “No, are you? You’re brilliant. Always have been.”

C’è un attimo di silenzio, e il cuore di Manuel batte dolorosamente contro la sua gabbia toracica. Non sa cosa si aspetti che Simone risponda.
Poi, Simone si stringe di nuovo nelle spalle, dice, “Penso di sì. Parlare con lui è… bello. Semplice. Non pensavo potesse esserlo,” confessa, a bassa voce, come se fosse un crimine. Per un attimo, lo guarda come se si aspettasse qualcosa da lui. Chiede, “Sto a fa’ ‘na stronzata?”

Il vento agita anche i suoi capelli – solitamente così ordinati – facendogli rimbalzare i ricci sulla fronte, e gli colora le guance di rosso. Non ha detto molto durante il tragitto in moto, né prima, quando si è presentato a casa sua appena terminato il pranzo di Natale con il respiro corto e le spalle che tremavano, ma a Manuel va bene anche così. Ha imparato a riconoscere quelle giornate in cui la tensione gli si accumula alla base della gola come una matassa difficile da sbrogliare che gli ruba la voce, e ha imparato che Simone, durante quelle giornate, non vuole qualcuno che provi insistentemente a scioglierne i nodi – vuole soltanto qualcuno che ne porti il peso con lui per un po’, e Manuel sta cercando di fare del suo meglio per essere quel qualcuno a cui Simone può affidare la sua vulnerabilità senza paura.
