Summary
“Dr. Langdon,” Mel said.
He looked over at her. She was outside on her balcony too, wearing plaid pajama pants and an oversized t-shirt. Her hair was down.
“Frank,” he said.
“I haven’t seen you,” she said. She wrapped her arms around herself, hands hooked over her elbows.
“I’ve been laying low,” he said.
She looked up at the stars. He watched the pale line of her neck, the way her shoulders rolled back. She tucked her hair behind her ears and he watched that too. Mel had long, delicate fingers and pretty ears.
“Why?” Mel asked.
She’d come nearer to the railing between them and so as he spoke so did he. It was almost like they were on the same balcony, that way.
(Dr. Langdon disappears and Mel King gets a new neighbor.)

Summary
Some nights were, naturally, worse than others.
Nights where Frank laid in bed for so long, staring at the ceiling, that it made his heart start to race with anxiety and his back ache and ache and ache no matter how he positioned himself. Nights where his thoughts spiraled out into worst-case-scenarios that seemed so vivid and inevitable that he would have to get up and go to the bathroom, just to turn the light on and look at himself in the mirror to remember what was actually real.
Those were the nights when he wanted the pills again the most: alone in his guest bedroom, trying to wring sleep out of his body like the last few drops of water out of a dirty dishcloth.
He tried not to call Mel on nights like that. He did not always succeed.

Summary
“Langdon, if you’re done with the personal call on the clock,” Dana says, appearing on his left. “Whitaker could use a senior resident in…”
“Just give me one minute,” he replies. “Mel, you gotta tell me what’s going on…”
“Don’t freak out, okay?”
In the history of people uttering that sentence, Frank thinks there are few who have not proceeded to freak the fuck out over what follows. But he’s an ER doctor. He thrives under pressure. If anyone is not going to freak out, it’s him. But it’s also her…
“Mel…”
“I…” Frank hears a faint thunk, like a tire hitting a pothole, and then the sound of someone hissing in pain. “I may have broken my arm…”

Summary
"I think it’s not about other people’s trust in you. It’s more about if you trust yourself.”
Frank trusts himself with a lot of things—saving a patient’s life, taking care of his kids, calling someone when he’s craving benzos. But with Mel? She’s so rare, so precious. How could he ever trust himself with that?
