Since Eddie left, they’ve been talking non-stop every single day. This unsettling silence doesn’t make any sense – Buck is sure something must’ve happened. Eddie sounded so happy last time they talked because things with his son were finally getting better. There had been a real light in his voice, the kind Buck could recognize even underwater. So, he doesn’t know what might’ve made him vanish into thin air as if he were a ghost. It could be anything, and Buck is scared shitless. It’s a nightmare and Buck can’t seem to wake up from it.

Or the one where Buck goes to his best friend's rescue in Texas, and shit happens.

From the apartment, he calls Buck, who picks up after two rings.

“Hey, did you make it okay?”

Eddie leans back against the pillows on his bed and closes his eyes, wishing he was at home on his couch with Buck next to him. Or that Buck was here with him, at least.

“Yeah, just got back from my parents’, actually.”

“How’d it go?” Buck asks. His voice is warm, even through the phone. “Did Chris talk to you?”

“A little bit,” Eddie says, and allows himself a smile. “Buck, he– he hugged me and told me he missed me. Of course, then he remembered that he was mad at me, but for a minute–”

“That’s– that’s awesome, Eddie,” Buck says. “Hey, uh, I gotta run, but keep me posted, okay?”

“Sure,” Eddie says, confused at being cut off so quickly. “What are you d–”

But Buck has hung up already.

Eddie exhales through his nose, still not looking at him, focused on the new card in front of him. “I’ve never had a Valentine.”

    Buck stills. “Never?”

Eddie shakes his head. “No.” He says it like it’s no big deal, like it’s just a fact, but something about it doesn’t sit right with Buck.

He watches Eddie for a moment, trying to wrap his head around it. Because Eddie—Eddie, with his steady hands and careful smiles and the kind of quiet, effortless warmth that makes people want to stay—how has he never had someone look at him on Valentine’s Day and think, yeah, he should have something special?

(or, buck finds out eddie's never had a valentine and takes matters into his own hands)

The Frontier is a good truck. He knows that. Reliable, practical, decent on gas for its size — Buck had done research before he bought it, had shown Eddie a spreadsheet, an actual spreadsheet, color-coded, and Eddie had looked at it and then looked at Buck and thought something very specific that he hadn’t been ready to name yet either. That was before. This is after. The point is; the truck is good.

    But it’s not Buck.

"It's fine, Jee," Eddie says. "Buck doesn't have to kiss me."

"Yes he does." Jee crosses her arms and looks sternly at Buck. "Daddy and Mommy kiss every time when they go away from each other."

"Yeah, okay." Buck sucks in a breath and steps towards Eddie. He ducks his head down and presses the most fleeting kiss to Eddie's cheek.

    "Not like that," Jee scolds.

    "What? Why not?" Buck squawks.

"Because," she sighs and gives him a long, disapproving look. "Mommy and Daddy always kiss on the lips."
