“So what’s the plan?” Cid asks, voice warmer now beneath the teasing. “Flowers? Fancy dinner? You gonna slick your hair back?”
“Shut up.”
Cid laughs again. Clive shakes his head, smiling helplessly down at the pavement before glancing back toward the humanities building.
The doors finally swing open. And there he is. Joshua steps out into the cold still wrapped in Clive’s clothes and he likes the view entirely too much. His messenger bag hangs against his hip while he talks to Jote beside him. His cheeks are pink from the wind already, hair messy from running his hands through it during class.
Clive feels it instantly. That shift inside him. Like something settles the second he sees him.
Joshua glances up mid-conversation, finds Clive immediately.
And, Founder—that smile.

“Take back Rosaria,” Mother scoffed. “How childish. We must only ask and Rosaria will be returned to us.”
“Ask?” Joshua echoed. “Ask who, Sylvestre? Sanbreque? Ask them the way you asked for the death of my father, ten years ago?”
Mother’s expression closed off. She shifted her grip on the child in her arms and turned sharply. There was no maid nearby; the only person available to take Olivier from her was Clive. Joshua expected her to pick one son over the other—Joshua couldn’t remember a time when she had ever trusted Clive with something she considered precious.
To the shock of everyone, but none so much as Clive himself, Mother dumped her squirming two year old into Clive’s arms so she could continue to argue with Joshua.
“Everything I did, I did for you! I had your father killed to secure our place in an empire threatening to swallow us! Do you think that betrayal was nothing? Do you think I sacrificed nothing to keep you safe?”

Clive works the closing shift at a bar where he doesn't care to get cozy with his coworkers and he's staring to realize that he's getting good tips because of his looks and not for the drinks he makes. He tends to put on Cid's show while he's doing dishes and cleaning floors after last call.
Then one night Clive loses a bet he shouldn't have made and he has to call Cid's show.
