Summary
Sometimes Keith thinks about what it would be like if Shiro had never gone to Kerberos. If the lions had picked other paladins. He imagines the two of them holed up in that shack in the desert, racing their motorbikes to pass the time. Keith still in the pilot program at the Garrison, Shiro with a job that wouldn’t call for trips to the other side of the universe. He pictures Shiro sharing his home and his bed and his life, the war in space lightyears away. Out of sight and out of mind.
As it is, they’re in a magic castle that’s galaxies away from Earth, and this is the first time Keith has gotten Shiro alone in days. Between Paladin training and Allura’s team-building exercises— not to mention the annoyingly frequent run-ins with the Galra— Keith’s had to settle for his right hand to keep him company at night. Shiro’s voice in his head instead of in his ear. Some selfish part of him wonders if he’s ever going to think that it’s all worth it.

“I know,” Keith says. An embarrassed flush spreads across his cheeks. “I know that it’s stupid, and that you can’t just, like, call off the mission, but,” and Keith can’t help it— he pouts. He feels so much younger than seventeen, so much smaller than he is. Angry tears prick at his eyes and he blinks them back.
“Hey.” Shiro stands and reaches out for Keith. Keith goes into his arms without hesitation. “Don’t cry, Keith, please.”
“I’m not crying,” Keith says, even though he is— fully now, hot tears spilling down his cheeks, pressed into Shiro’s chest where Keith buries his face. One of Shiro’s hands cards idly through Keith’s hair. “Please don’t leave me.”

“There’s… so much I haven’t told him,” Buck says quietly. Eddie’s definitely unconscious by now, and he doesn’t really care if the other medic is listening, but he can’t seem to make his voice any louder. “There’s so much I haven’t said.”
It’s all he could think about as he dug in the mud with his bare hands and screamed Eddie’s name. Eddie had to live. They had to save him. He wasn’t allowed to die before Buck could tell him that he loves him.

Maybe that’s why this is where he wanted to be tonight, their last night on Earth: because it reminds him of the only time he ever felt at home.

Steven groans, but it’s muffled in Shane’s neck. “If I have to look at the same footage one more time tonight, I’m gonna scream.” Shane runs his fingers up and down Steven’s spine soothingly. “Besides, it’s almost midnight.”

Steven rolls his eyes. “You know.” He waves his hand around in a myriad of movements before it settles and he leans forward and lowers his voice. “Having sex.” When Andrew doesn’t immediately change his tune, Steven juts his chin out. “With me.”

“You sure you’re okay?” Richie asks. “Looking a little cross-eyed there, buddy.”
“I’m fine,” Eddie replies again, a little more forcefully. He softens it, adding on, “Thanks, though.” Richie doesn’t look particularly convinced, but he doesn’t say anything more.
For the rest of the hour, Richie doesn’t turn his laptop away, and Eddie doesn’t look at the board. It’s just a headache, and Richie’s screen is closer and less of a strain to read. It’s definitely not because, when Eddie tries to look forward again, he finds that the words on the chalkboard are even less clear than they were before.
Definitely not that at all.
