There is a picture in one of the books of a worn young man, heavily scarred with gentle eyes. Remus Lupin, he is identified as. The man who was watching Charles, and presumably Harry. The man who died defending them. Harry traces his fingertips over the man’s face and wonders.
And then he stops, and reels all those thoughts into a tangled knot and tucks it away.
They didn’t want him; that’s fine. He doesn’t want them either.

Summary
Beth thought she had enough problems to be getting on with, after Voldemort's resurrection only a couple months ago, and the Minister sticking his head in the sand like a stubborn idiot, and the Prophet making arses of themselves. She had a nasty feeling this year was going to be miserable, she'd never felt so ambivalent about going back to Hogwarts. Except she never even makes it that far — she hadn't quite reached King's Cross when fireballs start falling from the sky. On top of everything else going on, now Earth is being attacked by literal space aliens, because apparently the infamous Potter luck has escalated to screwing over the whole damn planet.
At least she was right about the "this year is going to be miserable" part.

Her correspondent has been missing the opportunity to tinker with machinery. It gives him something to do between hunting down rebels.

Harry James Potter-Evans-Verres studied the petal lying on his palm. It wasn’t anything special: small, pinkish and split at one of the ends—almost certainly a part of cherry blossom. It wasn’t anything special, except it came out of Harry’s mouth.
After an especially intense glare, the petal dissipated in red sparks, and in a split second, Harry’s hand was empty.
He slowly blinked.
Then he immediately shoved his left hand into a pocket of his pants, took out a small, smooth pebble and pointed a wand on it. In one motion, the pebble was transformed into a petal of a Prunus serrulata flower, which Harry granted another intense glare. This time, the petal kept its form and just generally continued existing under the scrutiny.
“Alright,” Harry said to the empty room. “So at least I wasn’t suddenly granted the ability to annihilate sakura by simply looking at it.”

A rationalist short story illustrating the power of cooperation and training to overcome even those enemies solely motivated by accumulating as much power as possible.

Summary
The first several sections of Luminosity are very similar to canon in terms of the events that occur, although aspects of Bella's character, and her internal monologue, differ strikingly.
A few thousand words in, the plot is unrecognizeable.
The history and character of the Twilight world are intact in Luminosity up to the point where the story begins, with one exception: Bella's a rational self-awareness-junkie with a penchant for writing down everything that crosses her mind in a notebook. She maintains many of the traits and dispositions of canon - and Luminosity is a Bella/Edward story - but she's a distinctly different character.
Luminosity was inspired in part by Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, in which Harry is a scientifically minded and sharp-witted boy who was brought up by Petunia and her alternate-universe professor husband. Luminosity also draws on much of the material in a sequence of blog posts under the same title, also written by Alicorn.

Summary

Summary
This is a rationalfic take on "The Last Herald-Mage", inspired by HPMOR and other works. Accessible regardless of whether you've read the original series. Though far from perfect, the characters are trying to do their best with the information, intelligence, and skills they have. Unfortunately, their enemies are also doing that, and sometimes even reasonable decisions can turn out badly.
[Meta note: this starts out a bit slow, and book 1 is kind of a different genre from the rest. In particular, the rationalist content is fairly subtle at the start, and the effective altruism themes come out a lot more towards the end of book 2 and early book 3. If you’re moderately enjoying book 1 but a little bored, try sticking it out until the end of book 2.]
Ashamed of him, Vanyel's father sends his disappointing son to live with his strict aunt, the Herald-Mage Savil. Although he knows things will change, Vanyel dramatically underestimates just how different his life is about to become. Sparks fly as he discovers both love and magic.
