Summary
After a string of botched missions, Kakashi receives a mandatory break from active field duty. Stuck in the village with little else to do, he begrudgingly accepts an assignment to a short-staffed mission desk for the duration of his leave.
The only person more unhappy about this than Kakashi is Iruka Umino.

Summary
Kakashi Hatake was used to missions where everything was simple: a target, an order, an outcome. The shinobi Academy did not belong on that list. Iruka Umino was used to carrying the fragile, noisy world of children on his own shoulders and to not expecting help. A forced partnership. Reports, students’ tears, and far too much time spent side by side. Trust forms before either of them realizes it, and closeness becomes a threat that cannot be ignored. As long as the lights in the Academy stay on, each of them will have to decide where his line is drawn.

Iruka probably wouldn’t be particularly happy about this, either, if he wasn’t focused on just trying to make it home alive.

Summary
“Not your best idea, getting us to drink before going down the mountain,” Iruka remarked as he followed Kakashi along the narrow path.
“No one forced you to say yes,” Kakashi replied simply.
Iruka grumbled under his breath, unable to deny the jonin had a point. If his thighs had burned on the way up, now it was his calves screaming on the way down.
“As soon as we’re back in Konoha, I’m heading straight to Ichiraku for two extra-large pork miso bowls,” Iruka declared.
“Ambitious,” Kakashi said without turning around.
“And after that, an onsen. Until my muscles forget they ever climbed this damn mountain.”
Kakashi slowed just enough for his voice to carry closer.
“With a program like that, you could easily convince someone to join you.”

The man looked down at him without expression, and Iruka's instincts flared with warning. All around them was a nebulous of moving faces, but the attention of the crowd was directed towards the children's parade. Iruka was alone at the edge of a multitude.

“Funny. If I were anyone else, I would’ve gotten the impression that I was talking to him.”
