One of Phainon's palms unscrews, going to Mydei’s waist instead, then roaming up against his back to find the tenth vertebrae. When he touches it, Mydei makes a sound that’s halfway between a moan and a pained sob; his thighs twitch, and his nails dig into Phainon’s wrist, so Phainon rakes his fingertips across Mydei’s spine in punishment, thinking of gouging each bone out one by one. Pretty pearls he’d eat like roe.

“Mydeimos,” Phainon warns.
Mydei’s smile is bittersweet. “So you still remember my name.”
Phainon shoves him harder against the door, lips parted on short breaths, and Mydei thinks he will cave; will kiss. Phainon’s gaze goes from Mydei’s mouth to the tattoo printed under his eyes, then roams lower, down his throat, exposed by the now wrinkled collar, finding a fading dark red spot etched into the side of Mydei’s neck. A trace left by someone else. Phainon clutches tighter, and Mydei feels the weight of steel pressing against his skin. A ring. It shines brightly, brand-new silver and religious vows of after ever competing against the messy hickey some stranger left on him. Trading blows.
“I wish I could forget,” Phainon murmurs.

Or, Phainon accidentally develops a fixation on a man thanks to his own traitorous mind, and instead of behaving rationally, he continually makes the problem ten times worse. Apparently, having a PhD in understanding the human psyche does not make you immune to the biological weaknesses of it.
