It thawed before Christmas that year. On the 25th, water ran down the city’s chutes, and the remaining snow was quickly turning into brown slush at the side of the road. It was all around a miserable sight. The few days of idyllic snow had passed too quickly.
Most people were home, celebrating with their families. Gathered around a warm Christmas fire, children running around playing… Thomas Perry would rather not think too much about it.

"Then let's do it." Ash clasps his hands together, like making an agreement with himself and shaking on it.
"You want to?" Shorter asks again.
"Sure," Ash agrees easily, and something about it confuses both Shorter's heart and his brain. "Why wouldn't I?"
"Uh—a lot of reasons, actually," Shorter tries, though admittedly at the moment he's definitely thinking with the wrong head for this topic. He can't seem to come up with any of these many reasons. "Like—y'know?"
"Nah."
Shorter's always done his best with what fate's given him, but there are some choices he'll regret until his last breath. Shorter has sex with Ash. Years later, Eiji doesn't.
