Barth’s Adam’s apple dipped down, bobbed upwards, and his lips parted agape just slightly as if he were carefully arranging words in his mind. Tanrak’s mouth watered at the sight of it, the sliver of his tongue that glimpsed through the opening, the forbidden fruit that jutted prominent out of his throat. Tanrak suppressed the urge, the sudden rapacity to bite down.
“Are you. . . “ Barth’s voice was merely a whisper now. “I mean, can I?”
Against his greatest sensibilities, against the best teachings in the Bible, against what he had been trying to preserve his whole life — Tanrak clenched his jaw, then nodded.
