He can’t remember now what it felt like to be that boy, the one who laughed at peasants and their silly superstitions, their un-Christian ways of safeguarding their homes and families from the legends of old, the boy who didn’t know how real the stories were, the one who discovered his life had just been saved by something he would have attempted to slay as a monster just minutes before.

Hans sighs, beleaguered. “Alright, fine, I’ll explain further. Now, we are made in the image of God, are we not?”
“Yes, sir.”
“And as such, we embody all aspects of the divine. But because we are mortal and flawed, we do not embody them all, and imperfectly at that. When Adam and Eve ate of the apple, they introduced sin, and that sin was made manifest in their son, Cain, the first alpha.
“With Cain, wrath and rage entered the world. Eventually, God looked down and saw that it had brought ruin to his creation and he was forced to wash the world clean. They did teach you about the Flood, I hope.”
Henry couldn’t look at him. “Yes, my lord.”
“After the Flood, in His regret, God sent a gift to mankind: omegas, who embody His grace and strength. We are to tame the wrath and rage of alphas, and to stand against them to protect the innocent should that fail. And, of course, to help repopulate the world,” he adds cheekily, then laughs a little.

Unconsciously, Hans pressed his back against the wall to make space.

After the siege of Suchdol, Henry, Hans, and their allies return to The Devil's Den for some much-needed rest. It's been too long since any of them have had a moment to themselves—no missions to complete, no dire stakes to navigate, and no life-or-death decisions to make.
The Den, however, isn't an oasis for everyone. Henry and Hans are barely speaking after tumbling headfirst across their friendship's former boundary. And the longer they go without addressing that night, the harder it becomes to hide the friction between them from their friends—or themselves.
So Hans proposes a hunting trip to take their minds off things.
Nothing like a little fresh air between a lord and his squire.

“There.” Henry swallows through the thickness once again. In an attempt to bring about some levity, Henry teases, “You look pretty as any bride.”
Hans laughs wetly, something more of a spit than humor. He shakes his head and attempts to run his fingers through his locks but his hand pauses at the first touch of the chain. Bringing his own hand to his gaze, Hans’ mood fizzles, like barely there sparks bowing to a downpour. “Rather be your bride than her groom,” Hans clenches his hand into a fist and Henry watches the well-kept nails threaten to bleed the soft skin of his palm. As if Hans is on his knees seeking forgiveness for his confession, bleeding and paying his way into Heaven’s gates.

Hans’s voice rang out louder than he had meant to, disbelief and outrage seeping through. The man before him regarded him with tired eyes. Clearly, he had known this was coming and did not have the energy or patience to deal with it. Zizka leaned back in his chair before answering.
“We’re all nobles here, Sir Hans. It doesn’t change the reality that we are besieged and there are more of us trapped in here than there are beds available. Even Pisek is sharing a bed and you’ll be no exception.”
