Summary
"Jesus. You got that photographic memory or something?"
Gale shrugs, shaking back into his usual reticent personality. John only knows the word because he'd spied it on one of Gale's report cards, written in neat teacher cursive. He had looked it up afterward, stepping foot into the school library for the first and only time in his academic career so far.
"Something, I guess," Gale says.

Summary
But John isn't anybody else. He's John, and he knows Gale. At least, he used to think that, before Gale got wed and bed and slowly stopped returning his calls.
"Can I stay here?" Gale asks. The words come out rough, like it pains him to say them. John feels his eyes widen in his face. "Just for a couple days."
---
Or, eight years after the war, Gale Cleven shows up on John’s doorstep with a suitcase and a secret.

Summary
John talks to it the way he used to talk Gale through his moods over cheap cigarettes and watered-down whiskey. It's a habit he never kicked, needing someone at the receiving end of his monologue. At least the dog doesn’t call his bluff, nor judge him for the deceptions he tells himself.
Some evenings he sits on the porch with a beer and the dog puts its head in his lap and he thinks, alright, alright. This is enough. This can be enough.

John found a dog outside a bar. He almost named it Buck.

Summary
It’s all pleasant enough until after dinner when it’s time to turn in and Bucky brings him back to a bedroom that turns out to be the only bedroom, containing the only bed.
“You planning on sleeping on the floor?” Gale asks while Bucky stands across from him, hands on his hips, smiling like he doesn’t have a care in the world.
Or, Bucky seduces Gale.

“Hey,” John says.
Gale’s blues flick back to him, brow furrowing more at the grin creeping sideways across John’s face.
“I got you something,” John says, and then sits up, folding his body in half with a groan that’s torn somewhere from his lower back.
“No, you didn’t, John,” Gale says in the same tone he used to tell John not to sing.

Summary
“What?” John lets his voice pout just a bit, “Not lookin’ to walk into briefing standing at attention?”
Gale’s gums are pink when he smiles, white wad of gum clenched safely between molars and lips gone thin with his amusement. John tastes his smile, can’t help it, can’t stop himself from wanting to feel it against his own mouth, his own lips. Gives him a bit of tongue, a bit of cheek and a nip to the bottom lip that has Gale grunting again, a hand on John’s chest and the other fisting his shirt at the back, untucking it from his belt.
“Just ‘cause you like the color blue doesn’t mean you need a ticket that color.”

Summary
Gale can’t look long, can’t maintain eye contact with that empty cavern of a hood for anything more than a second, or two. Something looks back out at him that he knows, from pure animal instinct, is not at all human. Or hasn’t been for a long time. It makes his ears ring, a pressure vibrating through his head that he fears allowing to grow too strong. He looks off to the left, at the thing’s shoulder, where the robe drapes, soft and gossamer and grey. Like ash-filled cobwebs.
Its neck cracks as it regards Gale silently.
“I didn’t see it coming,” Gale says. His voice sounds shockingly numb.Bookmarked by copper_head

Summary
Gale had believed, maybe foolishly, that after everything he could count on John to be there, at least. Maybe it was because he’d never had any other close friends aside from Marge, but he’d thought that being John and Gale—Buck&Bucky—was something immutable. That it meant as much to John as it did to him. He’d known it wouldn’t ever quite be what he wanted, but it had never even occurred to him that John might just…disappear completely.
Or, Gale and Marge have a lavender arrangement that works for the both of them. Unfortunately, no one bothered to tell Bucky.

Summary
"They had a strained conversation after mail call, all those months ago, walking slowly across the barren, muddy ground, and John wouldn’t look at him when he told him he was afraid that people would only ever know the person he was becoming.
Gale could see it hanging over him, then: the spectre of the person John thought so diminished and so unworthy of being known. The person he was so afraid of becoming. And Gale thought, back then ‘what kind of person would not want to know every aspect of him? What kind of person would not love every version of this man?’"
...
Or: Gale, through it all.

Summary
Gale’s boot taps restlessly, knees bent to half–hunch over them, only his lower back leaning against the wall of the plane. He picks at the skin of baby–soft lips, staring out to the edge of the wing with glazed over eyes, and John’s heart twists.
He can think of a hundred and one ways to distract him, but not a single word of reassurance. He’s not good at that sort of thing; that’s Gale’s area of expertise. He feels useless.
“Here,” he murmurs, holding out his cigarette.

Summary
The first letter Gale gets from Bucky is about a unicorn.
-----
Gale’s used to John rambling when he’s drunk, usually while hanging off one arm hooked around Gale’s shoulders, but there’s a different note to his written word. When he’s drunk in person, he likes to pester Gale with questions, get Gale to talk about himself. When it’s just John and a pen, it seems he simply shares every little thought that crosses his mind.
He lets the letter close on its own again, staring down at his eggs until he hears “Good morning, Major!” from outside the mess hall. Hurriedly, Gale tucks the letter back into its envelope and the envelope into the pocket of his trousers. By the time the doors swing open, John sauntering in like he owns the base and the mess and the doors themselves, Gale’s sure all knowledge of John’s words—of that lipstick print pressed onto paper beside John’s name—has been wiped from his face.
All the same, he can’t resist taking a peek. John’s walking on air. Gale smiles.
