He was six, Sam was two, grinning up at him, clutching his glitter glue butterfly drawing in his chubby little hand, his heart had sunk, it was the first time in his life that he felt what was later understood as dread, he knew he shouldn’t have played into it, even then, but they didn’t have a Mom anymore, or a Dad really, not since the fire that Mama (Mary, a more often than not drunken Daddy would mutter morosely) had never come out of, and Sammy desperately needed someone to look after him.
