Summary
Raven hasn’t slept very well in a while, and like most things in her life, it’s Apple’s fault.
It starts on Legacy Day, after she didn’t sign her page, because of course it does. The phlegmy sobs rattle Apple’s lungs, but Raven’s soul. She didn’t think refusing to sign her life away to an eternity in misery and chains would upset her friend like this.
Despite the dim magical glow, Raven can’t bring herself to glance at the clock. It doesn’t matter what time it is. No amount of magical earplugs (a total rip-off), blasting music, or even melatonin tablets can coax her into sleep. It isn’t the sound of Apple’s despair keeping her up, she realizes. It’s the guilt.
What shocks Raven the most isn’t when Apple finally stops crying—it’s what happens right after.
“Do you hate me?”

Summary
None of them believed in any kind of God—especially not after this, but Charlie rocked Ranboo’s body back and forth, praying to whatever would listen. Every second he was sleeping was like a bucket of cold water, over and over. If Ranboo didn’t wake up soon, they might not ever open their eyes again.
By some miracle—or perhaps it was a punishment—Ranboo shot up with a shuddering gasp. He kept a right grip on them, hoping to avoid any further damage. They tried to speak, to cry out, to say something, but all that came out was a horrific gurgle. The sound had to have been on the same frequency as Charlie’s heart, for he felt it shatter at the noise.

“–a vessel using astrophage as fuel.” Grace finished quietly. He studied the image, an infrared camera’s picture, a red streak in a sea of darkness that ended abruptly. He zoomed in on the image, as far as it would go and then some, fingers braced on the glass to keep the image enhanced, but it was too dark to see anything at the tail of the red streak. “You think it’s an alien ship.”
Grace swiped his finger across the screen and physically recoiled at the image, the desk chair wheeling back with him almost a foot. “Eridian. That’s an Eridian ship, I’m sure of it.”

"Everybody’s Helioic, right?”
“Highcourt law allows for any religious practice, so long as it doesn’t cause harm or interfere with anyone else’s practice,” Buddy said. Truth be told, he’d never actually met anyone who wasn’t Helioic while living in Highcourt, but he knew that it was allowed if that was a choice that a person decided to make.
The boy looked at him intently for a moment, his eyes slightly narrowed, and then relaxed as though he’d figured out everything he needed to know by simply looking straight through Buddy’s eyeballs and into his brain. It was a bit unnerving.
“But nobody actually does that, do they?” he said. “Technically it’s allowed, but nobody actually deviates from the norm. And since everybody’s Helioic anyways, none of the politicians bother to keep it out of the government. So functionally, that’s a theocracy right there.”
Buddy wasn’t sure how this was relevant to how he was liking Solace after moving here.
“I’m Max, by the way.”(or, buddy dawn and max durden become unlikely friends at aguefort, and buddy tries not to think too hard about certain things.)

Gorgug is terrified. Death has loomed over the both of them for the past two years. Sometimes he thinks they were only meant to die and keep on dying.
“Do you remember when we died?” It comes out raw and raspy from his smoke-filled lungs.
It’s a sour thing, that even in the simplest moments of their lives, death will always be in a corner of his mind that he can’t close the door to. He stands here in front of his best friend, his reason to keep fighting, while the corner becomes a room, becomes a brilliant gallery of all of the pain they’ve been through. He’s holding on but barely, body tired from the stress of this battle, let alone junior year. He can’t lose her, not after watching her go down too many times when he couldn’t protect her. She seems to notice it.
She hugs him tighter, gripping onto his sweatshirt. “It might happen again.”
or; In the last day of their junior year, Kristen and Gorgug reflect on death and nearly die in the process.
