Goodbye teacher job, goodbye firefighting. See you never researcher gig. Of course, he's been expecting an eventual career shift into his old role as an overlord and planning for it since he joined Hogwarts, but he hadn't decided on it yet. He was giving himself time to be a somewhat normal person.

‘Oh, hey, yeah, sorry I can’t hang out, I kind of have a hot King of Curses waiting for me? Yeah, it’s not like I owe him a date, I could technically decline and stay here with you, but I want to see him so much it’s starting to kill me and you’re all gonna be fine, let me have this.’
