Summary
After Will moves to Montauk, Sunday night calls become the only thing holding the distance between them. But the dream won’t leave Mike alone.
He returns to the same beach night after night, a place he’s visited too many times before. This time, instead of running, he crosses the water.
Will is waiting. Close enough to touch. Close enough to kiss. And when Mike wakes, the feeling doesn’t fade.
The next morning, alone in an empty house for three weeks, Mike tries to convince himself it was only a dream.
Then a pale yellow envelope arrives in the mail.

‘And I know that’s silly, because we call on Sunday nights. But it’s not the same. It’s never just you and me anymore. I mean, obviously I like talking to Dustin and Lucas, but they don’t get me. Not like you do.’It’s almost frightening how closely their thoughts mirror each other. Every Sunday he wishes, quietly, that the calls could just be them. No interruptions. No overlapping jokes. Just Will’s voice and the space between them.
He’s never said it out loud.
And now here it is, written plainly in ink, resting between his fingers.
‘I can’t say things to them that I would easily say to you. No one knows me like you do, Mike,'

"He’s not actually sick, not exactly.” Joyce's voice is steady, but her clear stress shows, “He presented, Mike.”
She gives him a comforting smile as he blinks. Just blinks, unable to do much else. He doesn’t notice his throat is dry until he speaks and it comes out quiet, crackly. “What?”
“He went into his first heat overnight. I really should have seen the signs, it’s just so uncommon at sixteen. I wasn’t even thinking of it.”
Something's up with Will. Their friends say Mike is crazy, but if anyone knows Will, it's Mike. When Will presents as an omega two years earlier than most people should, Mike can't even gloat about being right, because he's suddenly being sent into overdrive at Will's newfound distress at the situation. But Mike will make it right, he'll keep him safe. That's his job, and he takes pride in it.

Then he was spotted, and the boy stopped in his tracks; with skillful movements, he quickly slung the rifle off his shoulder and pointed it at Mike’s chest. Mike raised his hands while trying to keep most of his weight on his left leg.
“Whoa. Hey,” Mike said, his eyes wide as he stared at the tip of the rifle. “Just hold on. I’m not—I’m not going to hurt you.”
