There was a man having a breakdown in the middle of the canned goods aisle.
At any other time, Ed would’ve just backed slowly away with his trolley and completed the rest of his shopping, leaving the guy to his own devices, only returning once the coast was clear to pick up what he needed. Except that he had done that, three times in fact, and now was aware he was circling the soup, UHT milk, and coffee aisle like a forgetful shark.
Modern au where Ed, a famous chef, offers to help a stranger cook a meal. Look, in his defence, the guy was cute, ok?

It started like this:
Francis— belligerent, bullheaded, half-cut most of the time— was increasingly spending all night in his office. James found him there, glassy eyed, late one night as he was finalising some project for Sir John. The older man’s head tilted to one side, not in sleep, nor in contemplation, but merely misery and drunkenness. James felt a surge of anger and, below that, want: want that rose thick in the back of his throat until he thought he would be sick with it.

In a lot of ways, it’s a relief to change out of Blackbeard’s heavy leathers and belted bits and bobs and slip back into something more comfortable; something more Stede. Ed’s worn cotton t-shirt was the only soft thing, just one thin layer of comfort, compared to Stede’s own cashmere and silk and linen and velvet— how uncomfortable he must be all the time, Stede reflects, as he folds the t-shirt with care, and adds it to the small pile of clothes he will be handing back to Ed, once Ed has finished his bath.

Summary
James is at the corner of the desk closest to Francis, looking down at the thinning head of hair. His pulse comes quickly, nerves fluttering. They are at the ends of the earth and it emboldens him, the thought of a court martial, a hanging, so far from them here.
“Do you remember that you called me beautiful?” He asks before he can change his mind.
An incremental nod, and the absence of eye contact. “I - thought I had recalled. Something to that effect.”
------James makes a second visit to his First near the end of Francis's withdrawal, seeking comfort and clarity. Things happen. Part 2 of my True Dark series, on-going.
