“Pack?” said Charles, trailing along behind him as Mr. Payne went charging into his own bedroom and threw open the wardrobe. He hadn’t even known that Mr. Payne owned such a thing as a suitcase. “Where are we going?”
Mr. Payne emerged with an armful of clothes—expensive, quietly lovely things in slate grey and brilliant white and fathomless midnight blue and that deep, impossible black—and deposited them in a heap on the bed. When he turned to look at Charles again, there was a feverish light in his eyes. “Dover,” he said.
“Lovely.” Charles wasn’t sure anyone had ever been in such a hurry to get to Dover before, but perhaps a few days away from the city would be just the ticket for Mr. Payne. Poor bloke was wound so tight something was bound to go sproing sooner or later. “Nice little jaunt to the seaside, is it?”
“And then to Paris,” Mr. Payne went on. “Then to Brindisi via Turin… Suez… Bombay… Calcutta… Hong Kong to Yokohama, San Francisco, New York. Oh! And then back home, of course. We shall return by precisely one o’clock in eighty days’ time.”
“Right,” Charles said faintly. “Well. Better get packing, then, hadn’t I?”

James pressed one hand to his chest and affected a little bow. “You flatter me.”
Sherlock shifted his chair an inch or two closer to James’, the little tart. His eyes were intent, and hungry. When there was something he wanted, he would pursue it until he’d chased it down, and then, once he had it in his teeth, he would be gone again. There was no point getting upset about it; he didn’t do it on purpose. It was simply the way the glittering, ticking machinery of the Holmeses was made.
“I could do more,” he said, quietly, “than flatter you.”
It was the sort of thing he said when he was only playing, but his gaze was steady.
“Careful, now,” murmured James. They weren’t the only people in the bar. “You wouldn’t want me to get the wrong idea, would you?”
Sherlock Holmes needs a favour.

Develop interesting hobby as talking point in the event of failure on points 2 and 3 – anything to avoid being introduced as Edwin Payne who had a nervous breakdown after two terms at Cambridge, holds a pissant little job at a publishing house of no significance or renown and couldn’t catch a man with both hands and a bear trap. Will be 32 years old this year, for heaven’s sake. Feel strongly that now is the moment to take charge of my life. It is our privilege to welcome you back, one and all, for the Summer 2024 season at the London Athenaeum. As some of you will no doubt be aware, this past winter saw a spate of minor thefts, with one enterprising thief successfully removing a marble bust of the goddess Carpundia. We are pleased to report that the probate court proceedings are now complete, and all of the stolen artifacts have been returned to us. For safety reasons, we must now ask that all rosaries, japa mala, ojuzu, komboskini, misbaha and other similar prayer beads are left at the door and collected upon exit on account of one of our new acquisitions, a devil vitrified in a prism of glass, and the multiple recent incidents of attempted strangulation.
We are proud to present a slate of all new exhibitions and events, including the crown jewel of this season: an exhibition on the 170 year history of the Athenaeum itself by acting head curator Edwin Payne. This is the distillation of an extraordinary life’s work, and one not to be missed.
