He whipped his head to the window. And there, the figure was on the rooftop a silhouette plastered against the moon, half a sphere hidden by the buildings. The person—it caught his gaze and turned, eyes burning bright under the shine of the moon. It took him long to register the rifle was aimed at him, then at the spot above his head. The finger pulled.
Another shot. He flinched. The bulb above him exploded into pieces, plunging into darkness.
He turned to the window, pistol drawn.
The figure was gone.

As she struggles to remain undiscovered by her new peers, Vulpes Inculta, the man who was responsible for the attack, takes a special interest in her for reasons she doesn't yet know.
