Summary
"When is Maman going to be home?" Sami asks, hours after the sun has set. Trinity had honestly started to think he'd fallen asleep while watching the cartoons she put on for him and she startles slightly at the sound of his painfully innocent, drowsy words.
"I'm not sure, bud," Trinity says with a frown, checking the time on her phone. It's already well past when Baran usually would have texted that she was on her way home. Her notifications remain stubbornly empty. "You know how busy she can be."

Summary
Yolanda knows Trinity's hands intimately. She knows the rhythm of them at work, fast and precise and unendingly capable. She has the feeling of them on her waist at two in the morning, warm under the hem of her shirt and pressing into the lower edges of her ribs, memorized. She can find the half-moon scar near Trinity's right thumb without a second glance and is familiar with the way she cracks her knuckles every morning as soon as she wakes up, like her own personal version of a morning stretch.
So when, hardly an hour into their night out with coworkers, Trinity's fist slams into a man's face hard enough to send him staggering into the edge of a high-top table, Yolanda is so stunned that she reels almost as hard as the actual recipient of the punch.

Summary
She does not move at first. Lying still lets her pretend, for a brief moment, that maybe the stiffness is temporary. Maybe she slept wrong and it's not her body reminding her that fifteen straight years of gymnastics will always exact their price eventually. Her lower back gives a deep-tissue, miserable twinge. Every joint in her body is stubbornly reminding her that they exist. Trinity swallows and stares out the window, blinds open into the backyard so that she can watch the rain drip off the plants in the garden. Baran will be happy about that, at least. Maybe it will even outshine her disappointment for Trinity once again not delivering on a promise.

Summary
Baran is in the middle of describing the look her ex-wife gave her when Sami's teacher suggested maybe he gets his argumentative streak from home. "It was so pointed, Trinity, you would have thought she was trying to kill me with her eyes, and I'm sitting there thinking, first of all, he gets it from both of us, she's a lawyer for Christ's sake—" She stops. Utterly stalls, mid-sentence and mid-motion, the rolled spinach half under the knife on the board. The hand not holding the knife gives a faint, irregular jerk at her side, fingertips twitching against the grain of the wooden cutting board. For a single disorienting second Trinity thinks Baran has simply lost her train of thought.
It takes Trinity a beat too long, something she'll kick herself for later, to understand what she's seeing. "Babe?"

Summary
Everything after that happens too fast to think and slow enough that Trinity will replay it later in punishing detail, her brain an endless loop of cause and effect. The patient wrenches his other wrist free, the restraints tied improperly at its connection point to the bed—fucking newbies. He seizes the opportunity immediately. Trinity would notate that point on her neuro exam (patient alert) if she weren't more focused on Yolanda at her side, in optimal reaching distance.
The angle isn't great. Yolanda is bent over him and she sees movement in her periphery a fraction too late, eyes widening as Trinity calls, "Watch out!"
