If I ever write Elle content I’ll have to make an active effort not to accidentally plagiarize this, because it has wormed into my soul as the solid facts of these two’s lives that make my heart hurt in the best way. Summary
Scott Goldsmith has just woken up, and already there was a vampire hunter in the town.
Just his luck! At first, Scott was going to ridicule him, but now he's not so sure that's the best option. He doesn't want to get staked again. Instead, he decides the best way to get at the vampire hunter is to say he believes him, slowly gain his trust, then betray him and take the town. He seems incredibly naive, too. Scott can tell he's never actually killed a vampire before.
Well, you know what they say. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. If Scott wants to have a bit of fun and regain his empire, sacrifices have to be made.

OR; Scott, instead of ridiculing Avid, tells him he believes him in an effort to gain his trust. They move in together as roommates. And for now, Scott believes that he's the worst monster in that town.

Little sobs, muffled into the woollen blankets they’d gotten together, but not entirely muted, still loud enough for her to notice, to glance over at the bed and see Avid’s shoulders shaking, face buried in blanket and thus not visible, though she could imagine how wrecked he’d look if she could see it.
The chair creaked beneath her as she stood, and Avid visibly tensed, the footsteps that followed having his (red-rimmed, tear-filled) eyes peeking out to stare at her, and she wasn’t sure what his expression meant, but she could imagine it meant something, some hurt or fear or shame at being seen.
“I… noticed you were crying?”

Summary
Many, many times, Elle has put herself in Avid's shoes, imagining how horrible it would be to lose control of herself in a way that's so violent. Many, many times, she has watched him snap and ached for him. She knows the effects of his illness inside and out, and yet all of that experience and careful thought hardly makes a dent in the horror that holds her captive after experiencing it for herself.
But she is not Avid; nobody will be coming to collect her.

Please read this please please even if you don’t usually read Elle fics this one will worm into your heart and rip it out. It’s such a good slow exploration of her grief for not only Avid but for herself and her/their life and feels genuinely so human and real in way that’s gonna sit with me for a good long while.
