Summary
It was their first winter in Jackson, and it’d been pure suffering so far, most of which had been inflicted upon Ellie. It snowed pretty much every day, and it was impossible to even look outside without noticing it. The progress that she’d been making with her nightmares was gone in just days, and she’d fallen back into the zombie-like state that she’d been in when they first got to Jackson.
Joel had been trying to think of ways to make it easier for Ellie. More selfishly, he just wanted to see her smile again, because Christ, was he missing it. Anyway, when Tommy came along and told him that there was a new litter of puppies in town, he practically lept at the opportunity.
TLDR// Joel gets Ellie a puppy for Christmas, and fluff and angst ensues.

“How the fuck would I know?” she called back.
“Please don’t fuck with me today. I have things to do; I need my watch.”
“It doesn’t even tell time,” she shouted back.
“Ellie,” he called, “I’m late.”
“Shit, who’s the father?”

Joel goes on patrol and gets caught up in a snowstorm. Ellie waits for him, feeling certain that something bad has happened to him to keep him from coming home. After three days with no sign of him, she decides to sneak out and try to save him herself. When Joel finally does come home, it's to receive word that his kid is missing and so he heads right back out to go find her before she runs into danger. Because if there's one thing they can both agree on, it's that the world outside the walls of Jackson is stock-full of dangers.
