Summary
Inej takes Kaz's gloved hand and leads him in the first moves of the dance. To any onlookers, they'd look like just another pair of guests, albeit younger than the majority of the people at the party. But she can sense the tension that comes with their touch, that simmering unease in both of them, and she treads carefully to the beat of the song.
For a heartbeat, she's back with her family in a twilight field, dancing around the campfire to traditional music. She can hear her parents' laughter, her cousins' excited chatter, the gentle gleam of the stars in the sky. Everything had been right with the world.
Inej gives herself the tiniest shake. This is one of the most dangerous people in Ketterdam.
And yet... there's something about the way he moves. Here, there, the tiniest hesitation, every time he needs to turn. It's nearly impossible to see, but-

Summary
The boat bobs in the harbor, small and swift. Kaz watches the tides push it up and down with calm, even motions, and for a moment, he wants to take it all back. Perhaps he does not want to lose the girl standing next to him. Perhaps he wants her to stay.
But when Inej cups her hand to his cheek and says something witty that he can't pay attention to, he lets her go anyway. He lets the wind and the sea carry her away, and he tells her goodbye.
(What he doesn't tell her is how he watches her climb to the top of the rigging as The Wraith sails into the blue for the very first time, and how, even as a dot on the horizon, she takes his breath away.
What he doesn't tell her is that he imagines her sitting in the crow's nest, sharpening her knives like panther claws, the sun catching her oil-dark hair. The vision is so bright he almost shields his eyes.
He never tells her that.)

“Powder, who’s that?” Vi squinted at the sky, trying to make out the new Ravenclaw seeker that was floating above the field. Something about the person’s posture and dark hair looked familiar, but Vi couldn’t quite place who it was. “Is that’s Tricia’s replacement?”
“Who’s who?” Powder asked, shivering in the November chill. She was wearing her house’s color—the Hufflepuff yellow was drawing quite a few looks from the other Gryffindors, but she had Vi’s maroon Gryffindor scarf around her neck. “Oh, the new seeker? I’m pretty sure that’s the Hat Girl.”
“Hat Girl?”
“Head Girl, Hat Girl. Fresh avocados, Fresha voca dos.”
“Caitlyn Kiramman?” Vi repeated in disbelief. “I didn’t know she played Quidditch.” Vi glanced at her sister. “Also, are you okay? Because I have no idea what you just said about avocados.”

It's just that, every time he opens his big, stupid mouth, I want to hold his head underwater until he stops struggling. It's a sibling thing," she adds, glancing at Lila with a twinkle in her eyes.
"Uh-huh," says Lila. "Sounds awesome, I can't wait to meet this paragon."
"You'll like him," says Allison. "Just promise me that you won't fall for it, if he starts to make goo-goo eyes at you, okay? He's always falling in love with some poor girl, and it never lasts. And I don't want my dumbass brother to get in the way of our friendship, you know?"
"Aww!" coos Lila, pretending it's sarcastic, but secretly genuinely touched. "I promise I won't fall for your dumbass brother."

He pulls a chair around and sits down with his arms resting across the back, giving her what he considers to be his most penetrating look. He's such a dork. "You've been so weird lately."
Lila uses one slice of toast to leverage eggs onto the other slice, and then shoves it into her mouth. "I told you," she mumbles through it. "I'm pregnant."
His eyes narrow, and then widen abruptly. "Wait—shit—for real?"

His internal clock tells him that she's been asleep for twenty minutes before she stirs again. She's been snoring, and it would be cute if he wasn't so fucking worried about head trauma. She interrupts the unnaturally heavy breathing when she clears her throat, and then grimaces—which seems to make the pain worse, and she blinks open her eyes and looks around, cycling through emotions: bewildered, scared, suspicious…Her gaze circles the room, and zones in on him.
"Who are you?"
Diego sighs internally. It's the same suspicious tone, every time. "My name's Diego. I'm a new recruit…"
