Down on his luck and drowning in debt to the oh-so-great Guildmaster Caine, rogue Jax is desperate for an out. His salvation? Joining an overhyped, painfully touchy-feely party embarking on a suicide mission to rescue some random nobody from a goblin dungeon. Easy money, right? Slip in, grab some treasure, pay off his debts, and disappear before anyone even notices.
Foolproof. Clean. Simple.
Then he meets Pomni, the party's new bard, and suddenly nothing is simple anymore.

Summary
Jax was her thrill.
The unpredictable current in her otherwise predictable, carefully measured world. The pulse of adrenaline she’d been chasing when she used to sneak into abandoned buildings, flashlight in hand, just to feel something.
Maybe that was why she’d always insisted on being near him, back then and even now. Whether as a friend or a lover. He understood her in a way that wasn’t blurred by affection or idealization. No rose-tinted lenses, no pedestal. Just her.
She wondered, absently, what she looked like from his point of view.

Summary
It's subtle at first. His shorter temper, leaving his food untouched, following her around. Everybody else writes it off as him being him, but something is clearly wrong.
Then he bursts into her room, shaking and drenched in sweat. He looks desperate and terrified.
“P-Pomni, I…” He lifts a hand to curl loosely over his chest where his heart must be trying to break his ribs. His voice rattles out of him, brittle with emotion. “I’m in heat.”
Her stomach drops through the floor.

He tilts his head a little, that guardedness coming off of him in waves. “...you need a ride home?”
Pomni stands there in the cool night air. The moonlight turns from clear to gauzy as a cloud passes over it.
“Yeah,” she eventually responds. “I do.”
Pomni's boyfriend drags her to a party, gets blackout drunk, and leaves her stranded. Fortunately, his asshole roommate happens to be there too and offers to help her out.

Summary
Jax was perfectly fine keeping everyone at arm’s length- he didn’t need anyone at all.
But when a circus update gone wrong plunges him into a nightmare of abstractions that seem to repeat everyday- he is forced to push his ideology aside and embrace the people around him.
Will he be able to overcome his own mental barriers and save the other circus members- or will he be trapped in this looping hell forever?
