“Of course it’s my business. You’re my friend, and I want to look after you.”
The words slipped out before Rand thought about them, and he felt his cheeks heat up. Mat looked pink too as he finally lifted his eyes to Rand’s. For a moment there was something so open and vulnerable in his expression, but it quickly shifted into an eyeroll.
“Fine, if you’re going to be so bloody annoying about it,” he said. “Let’s get this over with.”

After leaving Moiraine behind at the Eye of the World, Rand wanders southward, until he runs across the city of Cairhien, and discovers someone there he hadn't expected to see ever again.
Rand studied the man in disbelief.
His dark hair was longer now, enough so that he needed to reach up every now and then to push it back as he flirted with the stall vendor. His beard was shorter, or not so much shorter but a different shape — the sides were shaved off, that was the difference. His clothes were still as messy and disheveled as ever but… finer fabrics, more vibrant shades, cut more tightly against the silhouette of his body.
He finished paying for his food — a meat pie, it looked to be — and, after one last smile to the vendor, he started walking away.
As if drawn by a tether, Rand followed.

“A drunk neighbour,” Percy replied, doing her damn best to speak intelligibly. “I don’t know him. Asked me out. Knocked. Tried to enter. Hit the door. Left notes. Now he’s away but he always returns.”
“How long?”
“Three hours.”
“Since three a.m.?” Percy didn’t reply, and Luke didn’t demand it from her. She never demanded anything.
Percy listened attentively enough to catch Luke taking a breath at the other end of the line.
“Did you call the police?”
“They came, found nothing, left and now refuse to come again.”
She could hear Luke’s rage through her forced silence. She could sense her shut herself down to keep her rage at bay.
“Useless… trash…” Luke murmured eventually, and that was all that she allowed herself.
