    The Doctor has retired - or at least he says so - and he is enjoying a well-earned vacation on Earth, drinking tea, playing sudoku and chatting with the locals. He seems to have a very bright imagination when it comes to sci-fi stories, even if he affirms he doesn't like sci-fi, because it's dreadfully inaccurate. However, you're not the only person who seems interested in what he has to say. There are some people out there who'd do anything for a good story.

    Chapter 3
    It’s just that, you see, I’m not a particularly good friend, - he whispers, and his smile disappears. It’s like a switch has been flipped, and he’s dead serious now. It unsettles you a little. - I’m just extremely skilled at finding people who happen to be good friends for me. Too good, even.

    He falls silent for a moment, his mouth closed in a tight, bitter line. Then, he shakes his head.

    - I didn’t want to do this to you, - he says. You give him an interrogative look, and he lets out a frustrated little noise. - I didn’t want to draw you in, fascinate you with my little tricks. I’m very good at this game, you know? At this… this cat and mouse chase. You can’t even imagine how good. All I need to do is tell you a couple of nice words, and then you’d do anything for me. And it’s so frighteningly easy to do it, too. For the greater good.

    He’s gone on a tangent, and his words are becoming less and less understandable.

    - I used to have friends, you know? But now, I can’t be friends with my bait. Not anymore. I used to be able to do that, in this body. To split the two things, to push a friend in the fire if I needed to.

    Temporal fractures start tearing holes in reality so UNIT decides to assemble a chaotic team of former companions and emotionally repressed disasters to stop the world collapsing completely.

    Unfortunately, the instability seems to feed on unresolved feelings, which becomes a bit of a problem when Tegan and Nyssa are forced to fake a relationship for the sake of spacetime, Ace discovers Mel is jealous, Kate and Osgood continue dancing around their feelings with absolutely no subtlety at all and Leela and Romana’s marriage hits a stumbling block.

    In other words, eight dorks have six months to save the universe.
