Ray is waiting for the moment that Sand tells Boeing to fuck off. He doesn't, though, and all Ray can think of as he's in the pool with his boyfriend and his boyfriend's ex is that maybe Sand would be happier without him.
A little canon-divergent fight about Sand being way too nice to Boeing and Ray getting hurt by Sand saying Boeing was completely his type. Oh, burn.

Summary
After grappling with his actions and coming to an understanding he hadn't fully expected, Ray knew he needed to find Sand and apologize. Needed to make sure Sand knew how important he was -- how needed.
Sand was expecting a few things that evening. He expected the cigarettes to taste somehow bitter, the world to feel slightly dimmer -- he did not expect Boeing, his ex, to show up with his old tricks as though nothing had ever happened.
"His friends may have thought him a burden. They might have given up on him. But Sand never did. And even if Ray had finally severed whatever magical rope Sand held, he was still going to try and overcome his demons for Sand."

Khao’s high on all of it, on having this time to themselves, afternoons spent fucking lazily, covered in sweat and unable to keep from touching each other. Now, mostly it’s the way First looks in his black tank top, arms bare, the simple gold necklace Khao gave him resting in the hollow of his throat. He’s golden from the sun, smelling of coconut sun cream, rum and cake, giddy with alcohol and anticipation.
