    Duang notices several things at once:
    1. The way Qin stops mid-laugh, his eyes dropping to Marvis’ exposed throat for just a second too long before he looks away and swallows, an expression on his face Duang knows far too well.
    2. The way Jamie, when Duang turns to him, is watching Qin, having clearly noticed the reaction too, with a small, knowing smirk.
    3. The way Marvis, who’s always composed, elegant, effortlessly in control of every room he steps into, is somehow this undone by Qin’s humor.
    And, most of all:
    4. The way Duang himself reacts to all of it: no jealousy, no hurt. Just… curiosity. And maybe even something like want.
    So, naturally, he freaks out.

    “That’s a very audacious accusation, coming from an apprentice.” The prince was breathless, taking small steps back as Duang continued to step forward.

    “You’re very underdressed for a prince.” Duang shot back. His voice was like gravel crunching beneath his feet, all rough and low.

    Qin felt it in his soul.

     

    Prince Qin has spent his entire life being shown off, but never being noticed.
    Duang, a royal painter's apprentice, can’t seem to look away.
    He notices him, and gives him exactly what he's always needed.
