Dankovsky will prove that it is well within his own capabilities to have casual sex with Burakh, without succumbing to a massive heart attack.

Even if he has to die several times.

Summary
He inhales sharply at his own name, as though it hurts to hear it. In the pale morning light, his skin is almost greyish, paper-thin. If Artemy reached out, he could trace the sunken shape of his cheek, the small scar of a cut across it.
“Yes, you came here,” Dankovsky says at length, scarcely over a whisper. “You’ve seen—the state of me. Veni, vidi, vici—again, there’s really nothing to say.”
There’s a pause. Artemy draws in a breath. “I won’t say it, then.”
Or; Artemy goes to the Capital.

Summary
“… I’d say good morning,” Dankovsky said at length, a little hoarsely, “but I’m afraid I’ve lost track of the time. Good … something, Haruspex.”
“Afternoon. You look—” Artemy began, and broke off.
“Yes? What ghoulish thing do I resemble today?” Daniil blew out some smoke, staring pensively ahead. “A striga, perhaps.”
“—better,” Artemy finished. “Less like you’d gone already, and are only haunting me.”
That shut Daniil’s mouth.
[Or: a rendezvous with danger, one very cold winter.]

Summary
And so it begins.
He spends days cooped up in his study, emerging feverish, near-manic and pacing. Though they’d taken to sharing a bed for long months now, at nights, he is now a rarer and rarer guest in it.
Sleepless, he says offhandedly. But he barely touches Artemy, and Artemy hardly dares touch him, for fear—which he hardly voices to himself, at first—of being pushed away.
Or: Artemy thinks Daniil is leaving; and tries to make peace with it.

Summary
“You keep doing this,” he says, accusing.
Artemy doesn’t look away, eyes chasing the faintest movement of Daniil’s, as though wanting to pin him in place like a beetle. “Doing what.”
Daniil’s gloved hand moves as if on its own accord, and traces a line up his throat, jaw, the side of his face and ear. To map him out, commit to memory. Ascertain that he’s real. That he’s here.
Daniil whispers, “Bringing me back.”
Or: Daniil learns to just live.

Summary
Whatever it was, the little voice in his head, it told him to go home.
What he’ll find home is a different story. A vast quiet, thick and swathing. A dark hush over the rooms, the kitchen, nothing but the scraping of mice and the stray cat Notkin had brought in. An absence, acute, of Isidor, still lingering in the air.
And somewhere upstairs, far and close, in a room sealed tightly shut, another man sleeping.
Or: a breaking point.

Summary
“I don’t know if you’ve used my mirror, but you haven’t gotten any prettier in the past hour, Burakh,” Dankovsky says, sounding strained. “Stay and get your rest, or I’ll have to contend with having you on my conscience when they inevitably mug you on the street—”
“You might need to lower your expectations,” Artemy interrupts. “This is how I look. And your mirror is in pieces, by the way, have you not noticed smashing it?”
Daniil smiles—it’s not a pleasant smile by far. “Stay,” he instructs, almost condescendingly. “And take your rest.”
Well, two can play this game.
Artemy parries back, “And what about you?”
[Or: one night at Stillwater; glimpsed from two different mirror-sides.]

Summary
“You are dying in more ways than one, that much is obvious."
"Perhaps I'm dying, but I can't die."
His words hung in the thick air between them for a while. He imagined Dankovsky smelling the words, analysing them rationally in his mind before replying.
"I have made it my life's motive to find the cure to death, and I have yet to be able to wave any real results in the faces of my peers. But please, old colleague, do tell me what makes you special enough to have broken through the only thing in this world I still dare to believe in."Artemy feels guilty when he's eating; like he's eating food that could go to starving children, so as soon as the plague ended, he stopped eating. Yet, he can’t figure out why he's so irritable and weak, but especially so damn fatigued every second of his life. When it finally reaches a tipping point, the annoyingly elegant face of a certain Dankovsky is ready to catch him. Albeit not without his fair share of sass, of course.

Summary
He brushes a dark lock hair out of Daniil's eyes, like he had done it a hundred times before. Like all this time they hadn't been trading insults, then bruises, now spit.
"Are you taking me home, Burakh?" His lids are heavy, eyes hazy.
"Do you want me to?"

Summary
“It’s all right,” Artemy tried to tell him. “No one’s going to take her seriously. I’ll have a word with her about it tomorrow. She won’t-”
“No? Because none of them looked particularly opposed to the idea.” Daniil’s voice hung like the unseasonable chill in the dingy hall. “Can you honestly tell me they would disapprove if you were to, as she so eloquently put it, find some willing filly among the Kin and get a child on her?”
Artemy’s hesitation was answer enough.

Summary
The sun fought, coughing, through a dank grey fog on the day he was to save the bull.
Golden rays like fingers feeling for freedom stroked at his face as he stepped from the factory workshop and locked its door behind him. It was not a day to breathe in hope and exhale joy, but it was, at least, one to walk with purpose towards something he might set right.
