“You have a visitor,” Mrs Hudson added irritably, as John trailed after Holmes and Billy, “Oh, not you, Doctor,” she added, as John paused on habit. “But tell Mister Holmes that I’ll not abide the police banging up and down the house at all hours. What will the neighbours think? I’ll not get any other lodgers!”
This, John reflected, as he retreated from Mrs Hudson’s womanly wrath, was precisely why his landlady’s role was restricted to a ‘plot device’ in his short stories. The Strand’s readers had turned out to have a surprisingly prodigious appetite for his case notes - or, as Holmes tended to call them, his ‘over-romanticised recollections’, but John rather doubted that his readers would have stood for pages upon pages depicting Mrs Hudson’s passionate tirades about the Right and Proper Way To Behave as a Gentleman Lodger. She could write a book. Holmes would still break all the rules.

He gulps, trying to gather some moisture in his suddenly dry mouth as the outlaw cocks his gun. A smirk twists up the outlaw's lips under the shade of his heavy, wide-brimmed Stenton and full beard. Something dangerous sparkles in his eyes as Stede wets his lips. Stede's hand shakes where it hovers over his own pistol and his mind drifts for a moment, wondering how exactly he found himself so close to death on only his third outlawing venture.
