“You’re pregnant.”
“I’m what?” Kate choked on her chai, spraying hot liquid all over her jeans.
“No,” Kate smiled, sweetly enough as she slid her cup on to the desk. “I think you’ve confused me with someone else, doctor. There’s no way I’m pregnant.” Kate shifted in her seat, lowering her voice as if it wasn’t only the two of them in the room. “I haven’t had sex in almost a year, Dr Bridgerton. Trust me, I’m not pregnant.”
“You see, Miss Sharma, the thing is…” The doctor chewed at her carefully manicured fingernails, her eyes settling everywhere but on Kate. “There was a teeny tiny error, and…well… what happened was…well… rather than giving you a smear test last week, I may have accidentally artificially inseminated you with my, erm…” With a trembling exhale, Dr Bridgerton gaze finally met Kate’s. “My brother's sperm.”

“A list of gentlemen?” Lady Danbury's voice climbs an octave
“Of requirements. For a husband, that is”.
“And what, pray, are the 'requirements' you seek in this hypothetical husband?”
Kate looks at the notebook in her hands.
“Tolerable. Dutiful. Decent manners. Steady enough income to support a small household. No gambling debts or illegitimate children. Not a brute in private. And ideally,” she says, lifting her eyes to meet Lady Danbury’s, “he must have the ability to hold a conversation without being a complete bore”. She finishes. At Lady Danbury’s silence, Kate shifts once more in her seat. Then adds: “That last part is not so much a requirement, but a preference.”

With the beautiful life Anthony had with his even more beautiful wife, it was hard to hold onto his regrets, or really, any negative feelings at all.
Still, sometimes, when there were whispered words behind their back by the vultures in society, when his wife was unfairly maligned, or even when there were simply a few too many mocking jests by his own family in reference to his past mistakes, Anthony felt the familiar stirrings of regret again.
If only he could go back and give his Kate the season she had deserved, one where he’d shown her from the beginning that she was all he had wanted and needed in a wife.
