"And it's not your fault that your dad is sad, either,” Lyla continues.
"That one doesn't count! We don't know if that's true,” Eve argues.
Lyla pulls her arms back and crosses them across her chest. "Fine, then. But that's not a good reason." Lyla drops her voice down to a whisper. "Do you really want to tell him tonight?"
Eve doesn't hesitate before speaking. "Yes. I want him to know I feel like a girl. I- I am a girl. I just hope it makes sense to him like it makes sense to you."

“You know… Esteban always wanted a daughter.” Karen took another drag of her cigarette. Her fingers twitched towards dad’s lighter. She longed to ask for a hit but at the same time refused to contribute to this… bonding moment or whatever the fuck Karen was trying to pull.
“He did, did he?”
“Uh-uh,” She laughed. “When we went in for our first scan with Daniel, he was happy about him being healthy and all, but I could tell he was a little disappointed when the tech said “it’s a boy!”.”
She dropped the spent filter and ground it under her heel, before kicking it into the parking lot. “He’d be so happy. So proud, to see you.”
