Summary
She operates on a child whose name she does not know.
Her entire leg has been ruined, blown off wholesale by a bomb.
It is unsalvageable, and there is no fentanyl left. No other painkillers either. They do not have any. They have run out.
‘Azizam,’ she says, like the child might hear her, ‘azizam.’

Bookmarker's Notes
ch 1:
“She is a girl-child of Pompeii, body and bones defenseless against the molten. She will be cast in this memory for eternity. She wants to trace the girl’s cowlick as she traces Jahan’s, his little body silent against hers on weeping nights.”
ch 2:
“‘We are like Gods,’ a weak finger points to herself, then to him, dwelling on the hard bone of his sternum, her untrimmed nail piercing skin through cotton, ‘you and I, now. We have so much, in comparison to whatever I had. We are made into Gods, here.’He holds her hand again, tenderly. He whispers her name. It is unheard.
She pulls back, sits on the concrete. Lies back down, back flat against the X. Its dry paint is cool, biting through the cotton of her scrub top.
Her palm burns with hurt, hums with it.
She is still in Kabul.”

Summary
Van watches Max strain against Marya’s grasp, his face turning red with effort, the tendons in his neck jumping out. “I will never. Don’t! Don’t! Don’t!” His pleas get increasingly frantic, sweat beading along his hairline, breath quickening. Van feels hers speed up along with it.
“Oh-kay, he really does refuse to submit,” Marya sing-songs, releasing him and standing up in one swift movement. Like it was never there, her manic grin vanishes, replaced by something much more approachable. Van feels the loss in her stomach. “I thought that might get him.”
The tonal whiplash is stunning. Van’s still reeling, images of Marya’s gloved hands in Gotch’s hair imprinted on the back of her eyelids every time she blinks. Her grip on Max’s ankles loosens just slightly, and he pulls them free.
answering the age-old question: fellas, is it gay to tackle a man at the exact same time as your captain?

Bookmarker's Notes
“She wants her mouth and her hand all over Marya, everywhere at once; wants to be buried inside her; wants to hump her leg until she’s crying with desperation. She wants Marya to hit her. She wants Marya to fix her. She wants them both to be ten years younger, less jaded, still in love. She wants to learn each of Marya’s new scars and what they’re from; she wants to have been able to keep Marya safe. She wants to start all over again, wants to have known Marya before they ever met Comfrey.”

Bookmarker's Notes
She risks a glance at May, whose eyes are soft and shining, impossibly in love.
“You’re so beautiful,” Ai-oon breathes, like it’s just occurred to her, like it’s always occurring to her. “And now I can’t remember any of what I rehearsed.”
May laughs, airy and light, and leans in, pressing a kiss to Ai-oon’s lips, gentle but lingering. When she pulls back, Ai-oon follows, stealing one more because she can.
