The lines across his forehead are those of a much older man, but for once—oddly enough given all the stress these past few days—he looks his real age behind the eyes. It occurs to her that he must be younger than her father would be by now, if he were still here. Not by much, just a few years, but still. “You did everything right,” he tells her. “The plan was always to prioritize Katniss, get her out, and you did that. You stuck to that plan.”

In an odd way, she fills a hole in their little group, one he didn't even know was there before: she's closer to Haymitch's age than the others, so he doesn't feel like the only grown-up in the group. She's a woman, so Katniss isn't the only girl in the group. And she's good-hearted and determinedly optimistic, so Peeta doesn't have to bear the entire burden of keeping their little group from falling into gloom and misery.

Haymitch trailed behind silently, both in the ways of not speaking and having a feather-light step, which Katniss wasn’t exactly expecting of him. Though, she mused, perhaps she wasn’t right to be so surprised. Haymitch was a Victor. She hadn’t thought about this, though now that she realized it, it seemed obvious; of course he’d know how to move soundlessly, so as not to alert game. He was, after all, a hunter in his own right—only of different prey.

There, they provided Haymitch with Gale’s own bow, Katniss watching him like a hawk while a crew strapped trackers around their ankles. Something about the sight of Haymitch, a most loathsome mentor, and an even more disagreeable individual, handling an object that felt like an extension of a person so important to Katniss felt almost perverse. She wanted to reach out and grab it, hold it close to her chest, protect it from the hands of anybody else, for she knew what it was like to be one with your bow, where its wood becomes your fingers and the string your muscles.
