Summary
When Essek first pitched this, Caleb was not opposed. The idea of being bound did not arouse him the same way that binding Essek does, but it wasn't abhorrent to him. He was willing to try. He could tell, despite Essek's carefully neutral tone as he asked, that the idea appealed to him very much. Caleb wanted—always wants—to make Essek happy. So, even as Essek assured him that he would not be upset if Caleb refused, Caleb agreed.
Now, Essek sits perched at the end of their bed, grinning wickedly as he unwinds a length of glistening silver silk rope
"Excited?" Caleb teases, raising an eyebrow.
Essek bites his bottom lip, which does nothing to stifle his smile. "Perhaps. Are you?"
"I am intrigued, certainly," Caleb says. "It will be a learning experience one way or another."
————————————————————————————————————————————
Essek wants to try tying Caleb up for a change. It dredges up unwelcome memories for Caleb in ways neither of them expected.

Summary
Henry has a very convincing poker face, but Alex can tell he’s feeling similar. When Alex offers to take Henry’s empty glass with his own, effectively trapping Henry in his current conversation with no means of escape, Henry shoots Alex a look that Alex can only describe as a small, shaky dog stuffed in a handbag. Instead of subjecting himself to another ten minutes of small talk when he comes back, Alex leans in and informs Henry that he’s stepping out into the hall with a mostly-empty supply closet tucked just past the restrooms, punctuated with a firm squeeze to Henry’s ass.
Ten minutes later, Henry slips into the closet with a furtive glance over his shoulder, shutting the door silently behind him. He leans back against it, crossing his arms as he takes in Alex sitting on the ground, blazer thrown carelessly over the rung of a ladder in the corner. “Might I ask what was so urgent?”

Summary
The first two times he asks, Monty is able to more or less deflect the question. He makes a show of offering Percy his better ear. “What’s that, darling?” and “Didn’t quite hear you the first time.” as if Percy’s position on one knee isn’t telling enough and Monty hadn’t been hearing perfectly fine all night because Percy always keeps to his good side when he can.
By the third time, Percy loses some of his patience and is no longer asking. But because he is Percy, he is still a perfect angel in the way he says, with a fond smile, “I want to marry you, you goose.”
To his credit, Monty realizes his response is perhaps the worst possible thing one can say to a proposal about a second before he says it. However, detracting from his credit, he says it anyway.
He laughs, a shrill combination of shock and disbelief, and says “Don’t do that.”

Summary
I know logically that there is no good reason to cheat on your husband, no matter how insufferable he is or how much you despise each other. But my marriage to Richard wasn’t about love or commitment. I know that. He knows that so some extent. I don’t think he would be pleased, as he’s always been a little too possessive for my tastes, but he wouldn’t be devastated. In fact, he would probably jump at the chance to divorce me on such solid grounds.
I just have to decide if that’s a risk I’m willing to take.
Percy breaks our kiss, smiling against my lips as he rubs the nape of my neck. I find myself leaning forward, chasing his mouth with mine. He laughs a little but indulges me with another kiss. His hand on my neck goes to my hair. Every touch is so gentle that I never want him to stop touching me. I want to be covered by him and his soft kisses.
As a last-ditch resort, Henry marries his childhood enemy-with-benefits Richard Peele. In need of a distraction from his tumultuous marriage, he joins a local Shakespeare production where he forms an unexpected, and risky, connection with a member of the orchestra.

Summary
Benvolio is kept awake by his thoughts, recalling the night before over and over again. He thinks of Mercutio in the orchard, all goading and bravado.
Humors! Madman! Passion! Lover!
Benvolio knows that Mercutio was trying to coax Romeo from his hiding place, yet it almost feels like Mercutio was describing himself. For as long as Benvolio has known him, Mercutio has been a man of many faces. He pretends that he hasn’t a care in the world—and maybe he doesn’t, if the world were all Tybalts—but Benvolio knows how hard he tries. He throws himself into the battles of others. He performs for an imaginary audience. He wears his heart on his sleeve to keep his soul close to his chest. Mercutio needs to be everything to everyone.
Humors. Madman. Passion. Lover. Protector. Guide. Adversary. Gentleman. Showman. Needed. Wanted. Loved. Loved. Loved.

Summary
“I should have let the British kill you when they had the chance,” he says, voice low and menacing. “Give me one good reason I shouldn’t run you through.”
Stede considers it. “I can’t.”
Ed stares. “What?”
“I can’t.” Slowly, Stede gets to his knees. Ed shifts back—the movement looking almost involuntary—so that Stede isn’t caught on his blade. It gives Stede hope. “After what I did to you, what I did to my crew, I can’t give you a reason not to. I don’t deserve your mercy.”
An imagining of their reunion.

Summary
“Henry Montague,” he finally says into my hair, “I am never letting you out of my sight again.” He pulls away just enough to cradle my face in his hands, taking me in again. “You always come back missing pieces.”
“The leg isn’t missing. Just broken,” I correct. Percy’s laugh is watery. “Though I’m still not the most steady on it so…”
“Oh, Jesus, sorry.” Percy pulls away and helps me to the nearest trunk to sit on. He stands over me and kisses the top of my head, then leans his forehead against mine. “You have to tell me everything. Starting with what happened to your leg.”
I slide my arms around his waist, putting as little space between us as possible. “I will, I promise. There’s something else I want to talk to you about first, though.”
“Now?”
“Yes. It’s important.”
“Something more important than your broken leg?”
Finally reunited with Percy after his travels with Adrian, Monty has something to ask Percy and isn't wasting any time.

Summary
The farmer’s wife scoffs. “This is different! The king and queen have sent invitations to every eligible woman in the kingdom, and then some!”
Of course, that doesn’t apply to us. The king and queen have made it exceedingly clear that we aren’t welcome in court anymore. We never received invitations. Everyone will get to go but us. It makes me oddly homesick.
Felicity is unaffected and unimpressed. “Why would they do that?”
The farmer’s wife smiles conspiratorially. “They say the prince is in need of a bride. They’re running out of court women to pair him with so they’re giving him pick of any maiden he desires.” She studies me and Felicity appraisingly. “It could even be one of you.”
It’s a false hope. It’s impossible. There is no way Felicity and I would ever be invited to the ball. But my heart takes that hope and latches onto it, climbing up my throat. To see Percy again, to have a chance—however slim—at marrying him.

Yadriel glared up at him. “You are the worst. Terrible. A menace. I should have exorcised you when I had the chance,” he said flatly.
Julian smiled, leaning in until their noses touched. Yadriel felt the cold metal of Julian’s dangling tether against his collarbone. Julian’s fingers came to rest on Yadriel’s cheek, warm and grounding.
Whenever Julian touched him, Yadriel was grateful that he could. He thought about when Julian was a spirit and his touch was like ice, cold and devoid. He preferred Julian like this: running hot, fire in his veins, the sun in his eyes. Yadriel preferred Julian warming him from the inside out.

Summary
“I love you,” I say, barely more than a breath. “But…if this is what comes of it, I understand if we can’t make a life together. I was a fool to think…” I trail off. To think what? That Monty would give it all up for me? That we could survive on our own? That I would be able to stand this under the weight of that with my other sins? My aunt often liked to say I should have been grateful for God’s mercy letting me live this long. I hardly find it merciful if I continue to have everything taken from me. But if it’s a choice between my happiness and Monty’s life, I’ll say my three Hail Marys and never touch another man.
As if there could be any other men after Monty.
“Perhaps we’ll talk about it when you wake up,” I say, though I’m still not the keenest on the idea after last night. I still don’t have any idea what’s going to happen after this. I’m not sure I want to. I can put it off a while longer, until it doesn’t feel like Monty might slip through my fingers at any moment.
After Monty is shot, Percy does some self-reflection on his feelings for Monty, their future, and how the faith they were raised in told them to feel about it.

Summary
Percy sips his tea again, mulling that over. “Okay, well, why don’t you just ask a friend to come with you? You just have to have a date for the party right?”
“I suppose you’re right.” I consider his idea for a moment, then it hits me. “Percy!” I exclaim. “Be my date to the party!”
Percy’s eyes widen. “What? No, I didn’t mean me!”
“Why not? It’s not like you weren’t coming anyway—”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
“Percy!”
“Monty,” he replies, edge in his voice.
“Please?”
He frowns at me but I fire back with a pout that I know he can’t resist. Percy looks away, a smile tugging at his lips. I win. “If I do, will I get a portion of the winnings?” he asks, glancing at me again.
“Hm. I’ll consider it.”
Percy laughs. “Fine.” He rests his chin in his hand, meeting my eyes with a playful grin that makes my heart skip. “Alright, tell me about our date.”
In order to win a bet with his sister, Monty drags Percy to his parents' annual Christmas party. He doesn't quite win the bet, but he gets something much better.

Summary
“I don’t understand,” I say instead. “You want…me to handle the beast?”
My aunt nods. “If you can defend your kingdom from a beast, you are more than fit to rule.”
“How am I even supposed to do that?”
“Well, there’s only one way to conquer a beast,” my uncle says as if that’s obvious. “To slay it.”
When a mysterious plague returns to Mevalia, its people are certain that it's the remnants of a curse on their corrupt king from years ago, and the only way to stop it is to slay a beast, the corrupted king's cursed son. They turn to Percy, their prince, to save them. But when Percy finally finds the disgraced prince, he realizes he might not be as beastly as they all once thought, and resolves to find another way to save his people—and maybe the peculiar boy with wings he's starting to befriend.

Summary
So we struck the deal with the other gods: six months of the year, Percy lives aboveground, but the other six months, he returns home to me. It’s this cycle that the humans deemed the seasons. We managed with the cycle for millennia until something shifted. Until Percy wanted something that I couldn’t give him and refused to accept what I had to offer. But we’re as bound by the cycle as we are by our marriage. There’s no telling what would happen if the cycle suddenly stopped.
So, we continue this dance of ours. I bring Percy home. We fight about the kingdom. We ignore each other for a time. Percy finds sanctuary in his speakeasy that he thinks I don’t know about. We begrudgingly begin speaking again. We oversee the kingdom. Percy returns to the overworld. It’s how we get by.

Summary
Monty is used to getting visitors. Ever since he was cursed and left to live in isolation with only Felicity and Adrian—monsters like him—for company, the visitors come like clockwork. They arrive, wanting to kill Monty as part of their quest for glory, but they always fail because Monty's curse caused his gaze to turn people into stone. Monty has accepted that this is his life after the curse: being terrorized by mortals and never being able to face them again. Monty is confused a certain mortal is sent to him by the gods, a mortal that isn't here to kill him and can't be harmed by Monty's curse either. Monty doesn't want anything to do with this mortal, but the gods, and the mortal, seem to have their own ideas.
“I promise it doesn’t matter to me how unsightly of a monster you are,” Perseus says lightly.
The words catch me so unawares that all I can do is I chuckle politely. This changes things and I’m not sure what to do now. He doesn’t have any intent to kill me, it seems. He can’t see me. But that also means I can’t kill him. So, because the bonds of hospitality still confine me, I say, “Do you have somewhere to stay tonight?”

Summary
“I could’ve lost you today, Percy.”
After a pause, he says, “It comes with the position.”
“I know, but…this isn’t the first time that you’ve put yourself in harm’s way to save my life. And I don’t want to fear for your life every time there’s a fear for mine. You’ve done your duty as my guard a thousand times over—”
“What are you suggesting?” Percy asks though I can tell he’s already figured it out.
“—and you’ve been doing this for so long, plus with your leg as it is now—”
“Are you saying I’m suddenly too old and feeble to be a knight?”
“No! Darling, that’s not what I’m saying.” I squeeze his hand pointedly. “I’m just saying…don’t you think it’s time to lay down the sword?”
Percy gives a self-deprecating laugh. “And do what instead?”
With my free hand, I reach over and tap his ring. “Be king? With me?”
Percy has been Monty's guard for years, even before Monty became king. He devoted his life to protecting Monty. Percy was happy remaining Monty's guard even when marriage was possible. But after Percy gets injured protecting Monty, Monty has other ideas.
