He didn’t see it coming, how attached he’s become to their little group of four. He didn’t see it coming, how he sought their company in every class, came to anticipate their coffeehouse hangouts, or enjoyed their group chat shenanigans way too much.
“They’re good friends,” Ma told him one time in passing.
Rollan hummed non-committedly. “I guess.”
“Good friends are hard to find, my heart. Cherish them well.”
Rollan is 18 when the realization hits him all over again, of all the things he didn’t want to lose.

The stranger lets loose a full-bellied laugh. “Archons… I like you, stranger. When’s the soonest you can start?”
“Start what?”
“Working here.” At his clear confusion, the stranger’s grin only widens. “I mean, you are here for the job interview, yes? Consider the first half done.”
Xiao blinks at him. “What.”
“I should probably stop messing with you,” the stranger chuckles before straightening up on his seat. “My name’s Barbatos Dei. I own the cafe but I like disguising myself as a full-time employee from time to time. You can call me Venti.”
“You’re joking.” And just because he can mess up even more, he blurts out, “Like the cup size?”
“That’s the one!” Venti, the owner of the cafe and most definitely not the cup size, laughs.

He's trying not to make the same mistake at his second chance to pass his major but the cafe's owner somehow knows just how to unearth old, buried dreams he'd once had to give up on.

The storm dies down into a gentle breeze as the glow in the archon’s eyes softened. “What are moments of reprieve that I’ve given you amidst eons of constant suffering?”
“It’s because it only lasts mere moments that it means everything to me.” It comes out in a hush whisper, a quiet confession only meant for the wind. “You could be anywhere else right now, and yet you choose to come back. I’ll never know when the next time will be. So these moments… mean a lot.”

And all of that flashes into Callum’s mind when he picks up her blade– a half of two –discarded by the rocks with its handler gone.
Rayla was gone again.
But this time, maybe it wasn’t pointless.
This time, he actually sees Viren, alive and in the flesh. This time, Rayla turns back to him and tells him what she needed to do. And this time, no matter how much he feared a repeat of this moment, he sees the answer to the why in the look in her eyes and the thin line on her lips, and he lets her go.
This time, he actually sees her go and he doesn’t know if that was worse than before.
(He remembers two years ago, of Rayla going back to save that dragon in chains, and of him unable to feel any more useless in that moment.)
And no matter how much he understood in that crucial moment, it doesn’t stop the tears that now run down his cheeks. Doesn’t stop the painful breaths coming in puffs from his constrained chest because he had just gotten her back and he spent it all on the anger–

Marinette is 24, and just moved back to Paris, for her new job at Agreste Fashions. She hasn't met her soulmate, and feels like the whole thing is a sham. Her parents weren't soulmates and they turned out happy. The idea of someone being her perfect other half is ridiculous, even if the words on her wrist point to... someone.
Adrien doesn't think he can love anyone other than his soulmate. After his mom died, his father was never the same. Adrien is waiting to meet the love of his life.
And then they meet.

Summary
Marinette is a small studio dancer who wins a scholarship to a summer long ballet intensive. Adrien is a famous ballet dancer who would rather be at home than at said intensive. The end of the summer will bring about a showcase that could make Marinette's career, if she can ignore Chloé and focus on something other than Adrien.
Sore muscles, coffee breaks, and video chats ensue. And there is an awful lot of fondue.

Here’s the thing: Marinette had her perfect date with Adrien.
The problem is the second date.
Marinette has plans. She has so many plans. Lists and lists of dates she wants to go on with Adrien. Some she planned by herself, some she picked up from others, some Alya texted her at one in the morning because that’s when Alya works best. Marinette has plans and she intends to follow through with the them.
Hawk Moth has his own plans. And those plans involve making Marinette’s life as difficult as humanly possible.
