Summary
Samira didn’t like to think herself a liar but she had certainly made a habit of it. She lied to her friends about having a good relationship with her mother, lied to her mother about her plans for the summer, and now was about to spend ninety days lying to fifteen other houseguests to try and win a half million dollars. She’s done the math and she’s not sure how much of dent it would make in her student loan balance, after taxes, but it’s certainly not money to scoff at.
And at worst? She’ll have a story to tell during residency interviews that isn’t just my “my dad died.”

Summary
In the thirteenth hour of her shift on the fourth of July, Samira steps out into the ambulance bay. Abbot follows her.
--
Two hours ago she was desperate to find him and now he’s one of the last people she wants to see. She looks over her shoulder, unable to help the way she glares at him. “Are you also going to tell me I don’t belong here?” she asks.
Abbot doesn’t even blink at her tone, just cranes his neck to look at her closer. His eyebrows furrow. “Did someone say that to you?”

Summary
Samira needs a fake boyfriend for her cousin's wedding. Jack volunteers. The only problem is that he's the one person she's wants something real with.
--
“I’ll go with you,” he says, in the same low tone she’s heard once before. In an empty exam room last month when he said, I’ll pay for it, like it was the easiest thing in the world. Like it’s easy now to offer this.
Samira gapes at him. “Wait, what?”
“The wedding. I could be your plus one or fake date or whatever. If you want.” He adjusts the straps on his go-bag but never looks away from her eyes.
“You would do that for me?”
Abbot shrugs. “My therapist says I need to get out more."

Summary
Coffee always came after sex. It's so clockwork that one time the whiff of Dr. Shen’s shitty Dunkin coffee made blood rush to his cock. Brendon complained about this to her, because it was her fucking fault. She's ruined him.
“He is very handsome,” Emma had said after she stopped giggling.
“Not my type.”
“Not even a little bit?”
“Does he fucking look like you? No.”

Summary
He tosses back the last dregs of coffee, and looks at her again.
Her head is back on Dana's shoulder. Eyes closed, smiling. Fucking go, he tells himself. He's prowled long enough. He crushes the paper cup in his hand. And as if on cue, Emma's eyes open, meeting his.
It's a drawn-out note. Romantic vibrato, in the foggy lights. And for a brief moment she's smiling at him, but it's a leftover smile from her moment with Dana. The paper in his hand is warm, damp. Pushing between his fingers. And her smile shivers. Her eyes drop, lips pressing together like she's been caught. But he knows. It's him who's been caught in the headlights.

Summary
“He's probably one of those men who’s obsessed with their wives,” her friend had said sagely.
Twist of the wrist. Her wound jagged now. Harder to stitch back together. It was all so stupid. She asked Mandy to tell her that. Get it in my head that I’m being so fucking stupid.
“Show me a picture?” Mandy had asked instead. So Samira did. A goddamn screenshot she took from his public Facebook profile picture, because of course that was the only place she could find a picture of him. But he wasn’t holding a fish in it or anything. It was, inexplicably, an artsy affair clearly captured on real film, no filter. He was sitting forward in a chair below a gallery wall of oil paintings, a trailing plant a paid actor rounding out the top right corner. His elbows were on his knees, flash illuminating his eyes, throwing the corded muscles of his forearms in shadow as he clasped his hands just in front of his chin. Candid and casual. At fucking ease, with his stark wedding ring in center frame.
Oh shit, oh shit, her friend had texted back. I’m sorry, that’s devastating.

“Do as I say, or however that goes.” Samira scoffs, a dry, humorless sound. “Not as if I’m exactly a trustworthy medical professional.”
Jack turns his head to her—eyes sharp, assessing. Her pulse, thready in her chest, picks up into a jog. She juts her chin towards his hand, still holding onto her Marlboro silver. “Can I have that back?”
Or, Samira smokes. Jack catches her.

“Oh,” she says, flustered again — god this girl is easy to work up — “you really don’t have to, Mr. — Dr. — Jack.”
He cocks an eyebrow at her. “You’re a guest in my house Samira. I expect you to act like one, and that means eating breakfast when I offer.”

Summary
Emery Walsh had come highly recommended by one of her colleagues so Samira is a little surprised when, on the morning of her dinner party, she opens her door to, perhaps, the most handsome middle-aged man she’d ever seen in real life.
“Samira Mohan?” His voice is deep and gravelly. He’s holding two large shopping bags, filled with groceries, in each of his big hands. Maybe this is Emery’s assistant, here to drop off supplies ahead of her arrival?
“Yes?” Samira is suddenly, acutely, aware that all she has on is a tank top and her skimpiest sleep shorts. She can feel her nipples poking through the thin fabric.
“I’m Jack Abbot, Emery’s replacement. I would shake your hand but uh,” he says with a grin as he lifts up the groceries bags with ease, making his biceps bulge out gloriously against the sleeves of his t-shirt.

Summary
Working at a grocery store while studying for the MCAT and applying for med school may not be the most glamorous thing Samira could be doing during the summer after graduating undergrad, but the paycheck is decent, the customers are (mostly) nice, and her manager doesn’t care if she flips through her flash cards when it’s slow. Besides, she wouldn’t be able to work when she’s in med school and she would prefer to rely on her mom as little as possible.
So while her college classmates were romping through Europe with their parents’ credit card in hand, Samira was spending thirty to forty hours a week restocking shelves and running one of the two checkout counters at the Market District Supermarket. And it would be dull work if it wasn’t for one Jack Abbot.

Summary
Samira’s embarrassed to say but she’s so busy imagining all the ways she was going to lord her victory over Jack (starting off first by smothering his face between her thighs) that she doesn’t notice anything out of the ordinary until it’s too late. All she knows is that one second she’s walking past a dense thicket of foliage and the next, something is wrapping around her ankle and pulling.
The breath is knocked from her lungs as she lands on her back, blinking up at the dusky sky in a daze.
“Hey, sweetheart.” Jack appears in her sight line, looking all too pleased with himself. “You did a lot better than I thought you would.”

Summary
Dr. Abbot rifles through his pockets until he finds a piece of scrap paper and a pen. He scribbles something on it, using his thigh as a support, before offering the paper to her. “Take my number. In case you need to talk.”
Samira feels overwhelmed by his kindness. Her fingers brush against his as she gingerly takes the paper from his hand and Samira can’t help the shiver that runs up her spine at the brief contact. “Thank you, Dr. Abbot. I mean it.”
“Call me Jack.” Dr. Abbot – Jack – starts to make his way back towards the stairwell. “Take as long as you need, Dr. Mohan. I’ll handle Robby.”
Samira is left alone on the rooftop, fingers gripping tight onto that little piece of paper, ignoring the strange flutter in her chest.
