Summary
‘And Pony was pretty sure that the smile on Darry’s face could rival the brightness of the sun. The kind of smile that made the corner of his eyes crinkle from happiness, not from nights of worry spent pouring over bills, trying to figure out how he would be able to put food on the table for his boys.’
Or
Moments between the Curtis brothers, the heartbreak and love that it takes to find their way to one another.

Summary
'As much as he wanted to believe those words that his mother had once spoken, how the sunrise brought something precious into the world, Darry wasn't sure if she was right anymore. The only thing this sunrise would bring would be their first full day without her and dad, that each sunrise and sunset from here on out would signify a day without them, time that the three of them would never get with their parents again.'
Or...
The Curtis brothers try their best to navigate the loss of their parents for the first six months. Finding strength and love in each other and their friends, while it might not be the easiest, each other is all they have left.

Summary
'"Did you have a bad dream?"
Soda nodded weakly.
"Wanna tell me what happened?"
Instinctively, his older brother gripped his hand harder. Then Soda gazed back up at the ceiling and closed his eyes. "It—it ain't important, Ponyboy. You can go back'ta sleep."
Pony didn't like that. Not one bit. "You always say it's good to talk about them. S'healthy."
Soda said that a lot, actually. His words were always something like: "There ain't no reason to be embarrassed about this, Ponyboy," and then he'd wipe his tears with his thumb and grin that toothy, lovable grin of his. "You can talk to me. Always. Tell me what happened."
Pony always told him about his dreams. The good and the bad.
But now, he was only met with silence. Then, Soda sniffled. "I-I guess I do, huh?"
His older brother looked like he was struggling to find the words. Then he looked like he didn't want to speak at all. Finally, he settled on a deep breath. "You... you never came home."'
Or: Soda has a nightmare. Pony talks him through it.

Summary
And even as much as it annoys him to admit, Pony wishes this Darry - the kind, gentle one in the sunsoaked truck rumbling down Peoria Ave - could be bottled up forever. He selfishly just wants this moment to last forever. He wants to spend time with this Darry. Watch TV with him, do homework with him, play solitaire with him, toss a football around with him.
Ponyboy is used to hearing all ends of arguing from his older brother but when he and Johnny walk themselves right into trouble, Darry doesn’t chew them out like he should. Like he normally would have. Something ain’t right, and Pony’s got to figure out what.

Summary
Sighing, Pony lifts his head just enough that Darry can see the unfocused look in his eyes. “My head hurts real bad, alright? Everything’s too loud and the lights keep doing weird stuff.”
Darry’s brow furrows. “What do you mean ‘weird stuff’?”
Pony gives another small shrug. “I dunno, like…going in and out or something.”
The pieces are starting to fall into place in Darry’s addled brain and the picture they’re revealing isn’t a very pretty one. Just like their mother, Darry’s been getting migraines on and off ever since he hit puberty, but so far both his brothers have been spared the family curse.
It looks like Ponyboy’s luck has finally run out.

Summary
Darry is sixteen years old and has been breathing hospital air for three days.
Three days since the world rearranged itself into before and after. Three days since he learned that love could arrive weighing almost nothing—and that his hands, which have hauled shingles and thrown footballs and held together three people's worth of falling apart, might not know how to hold something this small.
Sodapop has not stopped moving.
The baby has not stopped breathing.
And Darry, who has not cried, sits very still on the patched couch and learns that some facts arrive already irrevocable: the morning, the floor beneath his feet, and the five fingers no bigger than grains of rice that have decided his thumb is worth holding.(Or: The night the Curtis brothers became three.)
