No one spoke of the woman who gave birth to me.
Not a whisper. Not a sound.
Mortals lived fleeting lives, the fae would say, with little to accomplish in their dull and fragile years. That was what the crueler ones believed. The ones who knew nothing.
My mother was mortal. Somehow, impossibly, she had fallen in love with my father: a dragon fae, a prince, and one day, a king. They called her a world traveler, a woman who had brought unfamiliar magic and peculiar traditions into our twisted world.
My father, barely two centuries old and far too rash for his own good, loved her with the kind of devotion that refused to understand endings.
Years after he graduated from Night Raven College, I was born.
The birth was too much for my mother’s mortal body to bear. She lived for only four years after that.
I do not remember her face.
But sometimes, when the world grows quiet, I feel warmth where there should be none. I hear a melody too soft to name, like a lullaby carried across time.
And I wonder if that is all that remains of her.
Or if it is the beginning of something she left behind.
