it isn't like deku’s ever not been stupid with it in one way or another, and not like he’s ever been able to hide his affections, despite his best efforts, for better and for worse. he’s had to relearn selfishness all over again since the first war, in part because of what happens when he’s stupid and obvious and paints neon targets on katsuki’s back. some shoulder devil (angel? one of those, he’s never sure anymore) scratches at his cheek and tugs and tugs, tries to pull izuku away. really, it’s trying to pull kacchan away from izuku’s danger radius. that same voice tells him to rush to draw the curtains back closed, to cut off the light and keep them both in the comparatively safer dark. himself, more than anything, away from katsuki.
or, deku and kacchan have a chill morning at the heights alliance kitchen, but deku still can't get rid of old, anxious thoughts.

There is less agreement in the boys’ faces than she’d like. Akito in particular has his mouth twisted into a grimace, and not just the usual one that lives on his face.
“Why wouldn’t she be?” he grinds out, shovelling the last bite of pancake into his mouth with little ceremony, like he can no longer enjoy it.
“Huh?” says An faintly.
“I mean, you know she likes you, right?”
“She huh?”
“...You know you like her, right?”
An’s voice comes out so pitiful it’s barely audible. “...No?”
Akito sets down his fork with a clatter and buries his face in his hands. “You’re not serious.”
Just before leaving for America, An learns what “the moon is beautiful” actually means.

Summary
He spies the soldiers returning after lunch, watches how they get on their knees to bow formally at Katsuki and Aizawa and announce what they discovered of the dragon’s carcass in the woods.
It’s then that Izuku realizes the gravity of what Katsuki has done.
At only age sixteen, following in his mother’s footsteps, Katsuki has completed the rite of succession by dragon-slaying; Katsuki is to be king.

Two childhood friends grow up dreaming of adventure, then grow apart as their dreams clash. Izuku yearns to be a knight, but the only one who can promote him is Katsuki, who has every intention of keeping Izuku out of the royal court.
When misfortune befalls the land, Katsuki sets out to reunite his broken kingdom, unaware of the secret legacy that enlists Izuku's protection from an ancient evil. The machinations of fate weave a tangled web, and Izuku watches, picking at the threads.
Perhaps they really are cursed.

Izuku shoots straight up, his upper body perfectly perpendicular to the ground. It isn’t Danger Sense ringing the alarm, but something (surprise?) has his muscles tense and ready to run. “Are you inviting me over?”
“Depends. Are you going to be normal about this?”
After a shared shift, Katsuki asks Izuku over to his apartment to meet his cat, Miso. There, he cooks them dinner, Izuku and Miso bond, and many buried things finally come up to see the light.

It’s a wretched realization; a feeling that it’s over before it’s really begun. And despite having already carried the weight of the world on his shoulders, it feels like living with this might be the biggest burden of all. The unshakeable knowledge that no matter how close they get, they’ll never meet; for the same thread that validates their connection also maintains the distance between their hearts.
“Oi, shithead! You comin’ or what?”
Izuku raises his head, and viridian meets amber. Despite himself, the corners of his mouth twitch upwards.
“Coming, Kacchan!”
As he catches up and catches a rare glimpse of Katsuki’s own grin, Izuku thinks that maybe it isn’t the worst trade-off in the world.
