Summary
“I can’t," he heard her saying to her classmate. "I promised my dad I’d meet him after school. He’s worried about me because it’s my first day, you know how dads are.”
She sounded exasperated, as though she really did know how dads are, as though she’d had one her whole life.
Beyond the annoyance in her voice though, there was an undercurrent of something else. It was almost as if she was bragging, like she was trying to find any excuse to say ‘my dad’.
Joel felt his heart swell with pride.

Summary
It wouldn’t be such a problem if she didn’t have such a massive crush on Dina, a crush that sometimes feels like it might be going somewhere when their eyes meet or Dina does stuff like reaching out to fix her ponytail for her, which sends little sparks of electricity throughout her entire body. They even linked pinkies during the last movie night, when Joel had opted out to go play poker with Tommy at the bar so she hadn’t been sitting next to him for once.
She wants to tell him so badly, wants to include him in this part of her life. She knows from other kids that they don’t usually tell their parents who they like, at least not until they’re dating or something, but Joel’s the person she wants to tell everything to. He’s always her first stop after a successful hunt or a good grade on a test or the highest score at archery practice. She wants to tell him about Dina, wants to be able to bring Dina around him. She likes being at home more than she likes most things, and she wants to be able to have Dina over in the place that she likes the most. She wants to pull Dina into game night with them and Tommy and Maria, wants to slowly knit her into their little family.

Summary
“Alright,” he tells her, holding her shoulders to make sure he has her attention. “Remember: Easter is not a contact sport, alright?”
She rolls her eyes.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” she says. “I just did an Easter egg hunt this morning, remember? Me and Ollie did just fine.”
“Yeah,” he acknowledges, “but now you’re going with the kids your age. Things get competitive.” Sarah had once bitten another 6 year old at an Easter egg hunt. It had been awkward, but it had also meant they were not invited back to that church next year no matter how much his mother bugged him about it, so it had been an overall win. “Just don’t kill anyone, alright? No Easter wrecking ball behavior.”
“We’ll see,” she says with a devilish little smirk that means absolutely nothing good.
“Ellie.”
“Fine, I will not be an egg assassin even though I would be such a fucking great egg assassin. Happy?”
(Ellie's first Easter in Jackson) (ft. family fluff, fun uncle tommy, and joel worrying about his kid murking her peers for eggs)

Summary
On the sixth snatched lunch, he decides to wait and watch. It’s childish, but they’d finally had help in so work had gone quickly enough that he could work on making cuts for the cabinet framing.
And it just so happens to offer the perfect viewpoint to watch his lunch bag on the passenger side of his truck without being immediately visible.
He waits in the hours before lunch ready for a fight, ready to storm out and confront his little shit of a little brother. He knows it’s Tommy. He knows it.
And then a little head with a brown ponytail sticks out of a bush, and he starts to wonder what he knows after all.
The girl looks around furtively, darts forward, jumps up to get her arm over the open window, makes a basket of her shirt, shakes out the contents, tosses the bag back in, and darts off, disappearing into the bushes once more.
All while he stands on the sidelines, saw still in hand.
(non-apocalypse au in which ellie and joel meet bc she keeps sneaking onto his jobsite to steal his lunch)
